Sometime back in the early 60's, while the "hippy movement" was on in America, there was also a copy-cat kind movement in the Philippines. Not really exactly as that of the hippies but kind of making "statement" against the status quo. Kids invent their own words by writing and speaking words in reverse, i.e. spelled backward or pronounced backward.

Example: Ex-president Estrada, "nicknamed" Erap, from the word "pare" (means buddy - from spanish word compadre). The police was dubbed as "alat" or "tala" from "star" seen on the badge of the police. Later turn to "lispu" from "pulis".

Now "pogi" came from the word "guapo" or "handsome". But "pogua" seems doesn't sound good, hence it came out to be "pogi" instead. Later modified as "pogito" and "pogita" for "pretty".

Other interesting words: "atab" for "bata" (boy/girlfriend), later became syota. "Erpat" for "father", so as "ermat" for "mother". "Utol" for siblings from Ilonggo's "utod"

I hope this helps clear it.

POGI is a slang word and is always used for the word HANDSOME.
"Maganda" for beautiful, lovely and sexy woman

"Pogi" means handsome, and only refers to the male.

If you hear "pugita" instead, that means octopus. Hahaha!

It's the alternative form of "GWAPO" which also means "handsome" in English.

Their actually synonyms but "pogi" is more of a "cute-type" than "gwapo"! haha..
