There are a variety of places you can go.
Generally, the east coast of the peninsula has better water and better beaches. Try searching for beaches in Terengganu, or Pahang like Cherating and Pantai Cinta Berahi (the Beach of Passionate Love). There are also islands off the east coast which are great. Again, try searching for Tioman, Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang.
The only thing about the east coast is the timing. Avoid the rainy season between November - March.
The west coast of the peninsula tends to be a bit more developed, and as the Straits of Malacca is a very busy shipping lane, the water quality tends to be much lower. But they are a good choice if you want to mix your beach holiday with city excursions.
The island of Penang is great for this as it has a bustling city and good beaches can be found in little coves. Langkawi is a good bet as well, with the beaches being better to the north of the island (facing the Andaman Sea).
There's also the option of beaches and island on/off the Borneo side of the country. Sipadan off the state of Sabah is reknown for its clear waters and fine beaches, and is one of the best diving sites in the world. While in Sabah, there's Mount Kinabalu to climb and the orang utan sanctuary to visit, not to mention the long houses of the indigenous tribes.
People there are friendly, and are generally eager to help. Beware the odd pick pocket, but this goes for any tourist area/foreign country.
Prices are generally cheap. We stayed a couple of nights in December at the 5 star Mandarin Oriental Hotel in the capital Kuala Lumpur (right next to the Petronas twin towers), and were offered an upgrade to the 2nd from top floor facing the twin towers with complimentary unlimited use of the cocktail lounge for about £75 a night. You can't expect more than B&B for that price in the UK. Of course prices vary, but that's the sort of comparison you can expect.
There's an abundant choice for food - Malay/Indonesian, Thai, Chinese, Indian. The only thing is to avoid "western" food, but when you spend 14 hours on a plane to the other side of the globe, why would you want a fish & chips? Small stalls and restaurants offer good food at really good prices, and even dining out in posh restaurants wouldn't set you back that far. Expect to spend about 200 ringgit on proper meal for 2 in a high end restaurant, which comes to about £30-40.

The most beautiful place is in Sabah. Sabah is 1/3 of the Kalimantan Island. There is little industrial development, so the beaches are beautiful, and waters crystal clear. *you can see count your toes from 4 feet of water!*
Seafood and accormodation is cheap.
Besides the beach, you can try tracking up Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in South East Asia.. (1 day trip).. take the river cruise into the jungle...
Sabah is a safe place from crime and terrorism because the people there are gentle and friendly. |

My husband and I visited Malaysia on holiday in May.
We went to Kota Kinabalu for our beach part of the holiday and Kuala Lumpur for the city part of the holiday which was very balanced.
The hotel we stayed in in Kota Kinabalu was Sutera Harbour which was amazing. Fantastic hotel just off the harbour with island trips available to snorkel. We went on the island boats often and the one island we visited the most was amazing. It was like being the only people in the world as we were the only people on the island. The snorkelling was breathtaking too.
Kuala Lumpur is a must too for shopping and sightseeing. Please visit Batu Caves, it's a must! |

If you don't mind about saving the budget maybe you can visit Sunway Lagoon,an exclusive theme park.Maybe you'll meet some other foreigners who come visiting Malaysia there and get some information from them. It's not a place near any beach but you still can enjoy the water there since it have the Surf Pool(largest) and some other water based enjoyable park.Besides Sunway Lagoon is situated quite close from Kuala lumpur(35km).
Yet,if you do really want to enjoy the beach with white sand sand,i suggest you to go to Tioman Island where both of you will have good times snoakling ,keeping your eye on the beautiful colourful corals and...you'll find yourself enjoying the barbeque time at night under the moon light .My friends promised me that:p The island's everything is rather cheap than other island's.
And maybe if you wanna enjoy to hear some band of Malaysian you maybe wanna go to Pop Shuvit's live. They'll do some live concerts in Malaysia soon. You'll be able to understand them because they sing in english. Promise you they are cool:p
Enjoy you trip then. |

i prefer you to go to bukit keluang, terengganu.the view in this area is one of the most breathtaking and magnificent in malaysia.it is also an ideal site for swimming, snorkelling and wind surfing.its distinctive features are caves which are easily reached by walkways.besides that you can see very peaceful village with beautiful wooden houses, innocent looking children playing games like hopscocth and marbles, swaying coconut tree, fresh cool breeze and a spectacular curve of white, sandy beach......enjoy it |

You probably wanna visit some of Malaysia's beautiful islands along the east and west coast of the Peninsular. Beaches on the west coast of the Peninsular are to my liking and i find them much more cleaner / sandy white beaches compared to beaches along the east coast of the Peninsular. Some recommended Islands are Redang, Lan Tengah and Tioman.
OK enough of the mushy comments as well, on the downside, you probably wanna read up the following below as well.

Sickening but true. Honestly, you're better off having your holidays in Thailand. It's even more cheaper compared to Malaysia. Furthermore, there are TONS more tourists in Thailand or even Singapore for that matter compared to tourists coming to Malaysia. Bottomline, Malaysia attracts 3rd world foreigners on holiday, business or migration. Recommended Islands in Thailand include Koh Samui, Koh Phanga and Phuket. |

Since you want beach + water sports + sight seeing + market , I recommend that you go to Penang Island. The food is quite cheap and you will find that the people are friendly. Safety... that is an issue nowadays right, but no worry because it is safe provided that you also take precautions, i.e. don't flash your money etc.
But Malaysia has more than that, so don't limit your travel plans.
I am providing a website for you to search for a hotel. |
