The report cited is a list of LCDs (least developed countries) based on UN-defined criteria and it is to be expected that the Philippines is not among those for we have long been classified as a "developing" country. All the LCDs are the "under-developed" countries.
The classification of 2nd or 3rd world is a separate thing altogether. It has mainly to do with level of industrialization and technology. And in reality LCDs are 4th world countries.
I'm afraid we're still a 3rd world country but you have to grant GMA some concessions. She is the president and she has to project a positive image for her country (our country). So she told some spins...good for her...now let's see her do real work to give credibility to her words. |

Glad to know that. But that was last year. If its really true maybe because of the Call Centers and the Business Process Outsourcing - BPO's company that invested in the Philippines. |

If PI was removed from "3rd World" status then they are now "1st World". GMA has invented a new category with this statement :D
The 1st, 2d & 3rd refer to the Cold War alignments. First World was US and allies, Second World was USSR & allies, Third World was everybody else.
Since most of the non-allies were also poor, 3rd World came to be a synonym for backward, poor, or not an industrialized nation
Philippines still has a lot of catching up to do, but they are definitely on track to be a First World nation :)
I like the way GMA has redefined the terms so that she acknowledges that PI needs to catch up still, while proudly declaring that they are no longer a 3rd World nation :D |

I agree... We're getting there.I guess this year is far better than the many years passed. Many investments are coming in the country and that means more job.
I don't understand why some people here is so pessimistic and have to antagonized all the time. |

I dunno how to react with this news because there is not much difference in the living standard in the Phils. There are still more poor people and the government has much room for improvement as mentioned by the answerer above.
And regarding Mall of Asia, Omg!, its nothing compared with other shopping malls overseas. |

Seeing that the Philippines isn't totally dependent on foreign aid for its survival I can agree on its 2nd world status. You want to see some real 3rd world countries then look at several African nations. |

i browsed thru the 2nd link & i did not see where it said that the Philippines is a 2nd World Country.
but it did say that with country's GNI, the Philippines can be classified as a country with a lower-middle income economy (which is not bad considering)
which places the country above all the countries in the low-income & which in our group we are ahead of such countries as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, El Salvador, Paraguay, Guatamela, etc. etc. |

2nd world country? That's a big surprise considering that there are still many Filipinos who are below poverty line and uneducated as well. Where did that statistics come from? From the same people who are licking the boots of the President? the yes-men? the sipsip and everything? I don't want to be cynical or sarcastic. I'm just looking at reality, the true picture of our country - not the painted image which our government wants to project to the world. Go into some cities, at the rural areas, in the barangays or sitios, there you will witness the true state of the country. Everyday I see these poor folks hard at work, trying to earn a decent living and eating a bowl of rice sometimes with no food or with just pure vegetables with no meat. Sometimes, too, they only eat bananas or sweet potatoes and nothing more substantial or nutritional. Then you are proud that we are considered 2nd world country? Maybe in the big cities, you don't see these kind of people but they do exist. This is why a large crowd of probinsyanos trek to urban cities to find work. Sometimes I blame them for congesting the metropolis but I have to understand that they do this in the hope that they can find permanent jobs as janitors or street cleaners. Well, I do hope that we are fit to be considered a 2nd world country and really prove our worth in the days to come otherwise, it is a great shame to us Filipinos. |

Just how does one define Third World, 2nd, or First? We know there is poverty and starvation in many parts of the world, even in so-called richer countries. In the Philippines, there have been tremendous upward changes everywhere from Manila to the provinces that I could barely recognize the places I knew when I left. I feel completely strange and lost. And, despite the fact that most of the population is still struggling, people seem upbeat. This is my personal view and not an expert opinion. |

Isn't that term second world from the cold war era days dahling? FYI, the USSR is no more.
Maybe we have risen to the ranks of the NICs (Newly Industrialized Countries) dahling. If that is so then Kudos to the Philippines dahlings!
ADD: There is no second world Well dahling. You've proven yourself a fake now. Organizations doesn't have the second world in their vernacular. Bogus piece of poo you...
FYI:The term "Second World" is a phrase that was used to describe the Communist states within the Soviet Union's sphere of influence. Along with "First World" and "Third World", the term has been used to divide the nations of Earth into three broad categories. The term has largely fallen out of use since the end of the Cold War. The other two 'worlds' are still widely talked about, although "First World" is now deprecated for the more politically correct "developed country" and "Third World" has been replaced with "developing country". |

yeah, we are! Thanks for the info. i never noticed...
for Filipinos, some of you do answer wierd. for me this is good news, don't u think?
And really looking at the list of LDC's provided, they are really 3rd World. Not that i'm undermining them, they need help.
Well this will do a lot of good for our country especiallly in the financial sector, investorments, etc.
a note to disgruntled filipinos, sometimes PLEASE be thankful for what you have. Its Sunday tomorrow, go to church and thank Jesus... |

I wonder how much money did she spend to make the media people publish this kind of craps. There's still a lot of Filipinos suffering because of poverty especially now that prices are going up in the Philippines. Yes, the Philippine pesos is going strong against dollars but it's like earning Philippine pesos but spending dollars! Don't just fall for such speculations like this through what you read in the newspapers but base it from the Filipinos living in the Philippines. Nationwide poverty and corruptions are very popular. She's just giving false hope to the Filipinos and using the media to make up things like this. Sheesh! She's living in a fantasy world created by her own mind. She better be waken up before it becomes a nightmare. <*-*> |

well, she just wants to show-off to other countries that thanks to her being the president and all, she "raised" our country's status from being a 3rd to a 2nd.
it's like her own way of patting herself on the back for a job well done for making statements like that! |

Philippines is now a 2nd world country!?!? Who on earth said that??? I mean, I'm from the Philippines and I'm not even aware of this! I bet it's not true 'cause only president Arroyo stated it. I bet it's not even official but I still hope that the country's economy will continue to rise. The peso is really doing good right now! |

Good for the Philippines!
i went there once when i was in the service, and there were some beautiful areas, and the people i met were very kind.
hopefully every nation can work its way up to being a "1st World Planet" in the next hundred years or so. |

I think Gloria needs to get out of the presidential palace and smell the air outside.
The flatulence-filled air of the Malacanang palace is causing her to hallucinate.
I would like to believe Gloria, but the evidence to the contrary is overwhelming. |
