Present from Singapore?

I am visiting Singapore next week and I would like to get a present for a friend's birthday while I am there. Any suggestions (other than food - which I heard the city is known for) what I can get her? I was thinking perhaps something that is characteristic of the city, or anything that is possibly interesting and unique for a birthday gift. Thanks!

Singapore is famous for Merlion. it's the city/country symbol I believe. You might want to get your friend something with Merlion on it.

Other things you can get you friend is a t-shirt with all the prohibitted things in Singapore. Singapore is a country with 1000 rules such as no chewing gums, etc. The T-shirt is awesome, you should look for it. I gave one to my friend for her birthday and she liked it.

Other thing to look for is SInglish - Singapore version or English. Something with Singlish, a t-shirt, a dictionary, or a book of Singlish would be funny too.

Singapore is famous for multi-racial, so u can try to find traditional clothes there. Such as : Kebaya(Malay), Cheong Sam(Chinese), Saree(Indian).....u can pick either one for your friend. For Kebaya u can try to find in Geylang Serai area or Kampong Glam. Cheong Sam, go to China Town, and for Saree...go to Little India.

Hey...lots of stuff u can get here...some examples r:

1) Tiger Bum Oil...(medicated oil - famous local brand)

2) Orchid Flower Pendants (Gold Plated) - National Flower

3) Tourist T-shirts (quite common along tourist attractions)

4) Baju kebaya (the same uniform Singapore Airlines girls wear...many girls like them)

5) Merlion Keychain / Paperweight / Wallets...etc etc...(too common)

6) Currency in different denominations...some people do collect foreign currency...

Hope u can find an interesting suggestion here...

Cheers...

Merlion souvenirs? FINE COUNTRY T-shitrts? Oh No. U pple recommend things that no Singaporean will buy. Something that is truely Singaporean, thats hard. A copy of the Straits Times? I really have no idea. Singapore version of FHM or Maxim? Talking C.o.c.k Dictionary? Books on Singapore by Neil Humphreys? Local cooking recepies? LKY's Autobiography? Maybe you can check out the Singapore Art Museum or Singapore museum, there may be interesting collectibles there.

An "Ang Pow" is a typical Singaporean present, not interesting nor unique though. It's a red package with money inside. Your friend can use the money to buy whatever, her/she likes.

Get something that carries the MERLION symbol (a truly Singaporean icon, a mythological creature of a fish with a lion's head). Wide range of products - keychains to bags. The RISIS ORCHID will be ladies' favorite, also available in products for men/offices - 'live' orchid coated with silver/gold. Available as pendants, brooches, earrings, pen holders, paper weights etc. Also great gift ideas from SELANGOR PEWTER, will costs slightly more but make very impressive gifts. Have fun while you are there :-)
