This expression of "proud to be" thing is usually misused. It should only be used by people who have accomplished something big or grand . To be proud of something that isn't great nor nowhere near to being great is just plain _ _ _ _ _ _. |

FIRST.... Every nation I have visited around the world the natives take pride in their country..... as they should
Saying , " I am proud to be........." is not unique to the Philippines
SECOND: Filipinos say they are proud to be Filipino in both English and Tagalog.... and Cebuano......and Visayan.....and 54 other dialects / languages...... how many languages did you say you speak? The English language is the base language of the Philippine education system. When you hear some Filipino say they are proud in English.....he or she is educated and proud of that too
FINALLY History is written by those in power for their own reasons..... the Philippine people were dominated by other nations for almost 400 years.....the history books were all written by those powers and glorified the imperialistic nations..... Filipino history was neglected ......often left unknown and unheralded...... In the last 60 years Filipinos have discovered their lost heritage.....MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ SOME BOOKS AND LEARN WHY THEY ARE SO PROUD
EDIT....Hmmmmm
The Philippines had medical schools 57 years before America.....and gave women equal rights 20 years before America....The Philippines had the first banks , universities and newspapers in Asia..... The Philippines was the first Asian nation to fight and throw off the colonial power....the oldest Asian community in America was Filipino....A Filipino helped found Los Angeles.....29 Filipinos fought with distinction in the American Civil War ( one on the Merrimack)..... there were Filipinos in America before the Mayflower.... in pre-Spanish days the Philippines was famous in Asia for being the most honest.... the concept of non-violent protest that won civil rights for American blacks was created by Jose Rizal...... the "Green Revolution" that has saved countless lives started in the Philippines.... While penicillan was discovered by Alexander Flemming; erymicin, a better antibiotic was discovered by a Filipino.....color graphics on your computer was developed by a Filipino..... Filipinos developed their own alphabet and were highly literate BEFORE being discovered(??) by Europeans..... want more....?? |

I am Filipino. I've never said, "I'm proud to be Filipino" and I've never heard it.
Perhaps it is in English because English is one of the official languages, along with Filipino. |

Proud they can speak Tagalog or another Dialect plus English and possibly you cannot. Proud that they do not live next door to you. Proud that they can let people like you know they are proud in a language you can understand. |

huh?

i am proud that the blood of valiant heroes flows in my veins. that i have freedom from oppression and tyranny because my ancestors laid the ground to the philippines' independence.

Hm. This may be a response to all the other races who tend to put our humble country down. I, for one, am proud to be a Filipino. And I have said it many times, albeit in different ways.
What am I proud of? That we have universities four hundred years old and counting. That we can laugh despite crazy low wages and incredibly high food prices. That we say "po" when referring to our elders. That we live in one of the few "true" democracies in the world. (No "electoral colleges" here. My vote is one vote.) That we have a history filled with colonizers and tyrants, but we're still here -- still living, still breathing, still hoping, still striving for something better.
Now, why is it in English? Because English is the global lingua franca, and we just want to make it clear to the folks who call us "Third World" that we just don't care what they call us. We like it here.
Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! (i.e., "Long Live the Philippines!") How's that for Tagalog? |

IM PROUD TO BE A FILIPINO. Well im a filipino-american and im proud of being a filipino. I use to live in United States but i decided to move and study in the Philippines. Im first year og high school. The reason its in english is because the second used language in Philippines beside Tagolog is english. I do not speak any filipino langage but in the schools in the Philippines they commonly speak english.
I love the Philippines!!! |

It makes no sense to be proud of something you arent responsible for. I think of that every time I hear some arrogant american tell me how proud he is to be american. |

simply because english is widely understood and is one of the official languages here. to ensure that you get the message across to even those who do not speak filipino, the expression was made in english. |

I'm filipino and there are some things that i'm proud of and some not. One of the things i'm proud of is what the country went throughout the past years like the wars they fought. But there are many things that i'm not proud of. First of all is the the gov't. The gov't is very corrupt. The President is taking the people's money. Another reason is how come the Philippines didn't want to be part of US terroritory? What's happening in the Philippines right now wouldn't be happening if the US took a hold of the it. Another reason is the people. I'm not saying all of them are like this but many are rude even though they are trying to be funny, stingy, and copying everyone else in this world. But what i really like about being a filipino is our culture and our backround. =) |

First of all, let's get the easy part out of the way. English is one of the two official languages here. You have heard it in English... maybe you heard foreigners say in English "I'm proud to be a ______". I was born in Europe and can say I'm proud to be Czech". Have you ever heard "I'm proud to be Filipino!" in Tagalog?
Now - what is there to be proud of? Your heritage. The past and present achievements of your nation. Your national heroes and patriots - God knows, you have so few of them now. I will probably get attacked for saying this, but the only patriot you now have is Teofisto Guingona. OK - what is a patriot? It is not someone who puts himself or his family first - or barangay, or his political party. It is a person who puts his country first; who is willing to give his life for his nation...
Nuff said ~ |
