I love Singapore

Question about the Singaporean flag?

Why is there a crescent on the Singaporean flag, though Muslims only constitute 16% of the whole population?

Meaning of Singapore Nation Flag:

The flag consists of two equal horizontal sections, red above white. In the upper left section are a white crescent moon, and five white stars forming a circle. Each feature of the flag has its own distinctive meaning and significance. Red symbolises universal brotherhood and equality of man. White signifies pervading and everlasting purity and virtue.

The CRESENT MOON represents a young nation on the ascendant. The five stars stand for the nation's ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

The crescent does not represent muslims... The crescent represents a young nation on the rise... =D

"What i think is..

The crescent & the stars represent muslim malays.."

Oh well...have you seen a flag of China before?
This was long discussed from the people when the flag was first introduced.
The Malays said that the crescrent respresent Islamic, and that they change from a star to 5 stars so that it somehow 'hide' their intention and to reduce disagreement from other races.
The Chinese said the 5 stars has the same meaning as the 5 stars on a Chinese flag.

Well, to me..this is only a flag. Our flag.
Singapore is a country with free of religion. Everyone is free to practise any religion.

You can understand more from this song, "Five Stars Arising". Yes the new moon referred to our new nation, which in this song said that was rising out of a stormy sea, just like how our nation rose out of the turbulent years in the 50s. The flag signifies our hope for a better tomorrow and striving hard towards a future!

Five Stars Arising
Music & Lyrics: Lim Su Chong

There's a new moon arising, out of the stormy sea
Youthful and bright and bearing hope, and tranquil as can be
Reach out for the moon above, savour freedom, truth and love
There's a new moon arising, out of the stormy sea

There are five stars arising, out of the stormy sea
Each is a lamp to guide our way; a lamp for all to see
Reach out for the stars above, savour freedom, truth and love
There are five stars arising, out of the stormy sea

There's a new flag arising, out of the stormy sea
Crimson as the blood of all mankind, yet white and pure and free
Reach out for the flag above, savour freedom, truth and love
There's a new flag arising, happy and proud are we

Ermm, what has the crescent got to do with Muslims? It doesn't represent anything about Muslims at all. The crescent moon is called 'the new moon' in Chinese, meaning that the nation is a new and young nation.
