Should Malaysia ban pork eating? |
CHICAGO - New studies on food safety have found pork may contain even more dangerous germs than poultry.
The findings were presented at the 2001 Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in Chicago.
A team of researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested nearly 600 packages of ground pork purchased from different grocery stores in five states.
They found high levels of Enterococci bacteria, a common cause of food poisoning that is resistant to antibiotic drugs.
Scientists say patients who have antibiotic-resistant enterococcal infections have a death rate of 37 per cent.
Enterococci were found on three per cent of ground pork.
"With pork chops or steaks, you've got bacteria contamination on the outside," says lead researcher Jennifer McClennan.
And with ground meats, the bacteria are found throughout, making them more dangerous.
"You've got to make sure to cook (pork) thoroughly."
As a result, McClennan says cooks should follow stringent practices when they prepare pork and anything cooked less than medium is probably not a good idea.
Another study presented at the symposium raised further concerns about pork.
Dutch researchers found the Enterococci bacteria in pigs cause more trouble for humans than the same type of bacteria found in poultry.
The researchers recommended farmers use antibiotics sparingly on their animals.
About half of the antibiotics given to animals worldwide are used so they can grow bigger and remain disease-free.
The continuous exposure to antibiotics can also alter the balance of good to bad germs, promoting the antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria in the animal.
Resistant strains can be passed on to humans when they consume the meat of the animal. Researchers found these bacteria in pork seemed to survive and thrive longer in humans than those found in poultry. |

I know pig are disgusting animals. Ask me, i lived near a pig farm when i was small. The pigs used to eat their own shits.
I used to eat pork but now i've completely stopped eating red meats (yes including beef and mutton). The best diet is eat fish (proteins) and vegetables. But than again, i believe all religion do not prohibit pork eating except Islam. So i still think it is up to the individual themselves to decide what to eat what not. |

If pork consumption were to be banned, why would it only be in Malaysia? Shouldn't it worldwide if it were so dangerous? |

every farm animal is in the risk of getting bacteria, should we ban those as well and go vegetarian?
just because of 1 issue then we ban things, we should look for alternative to solve the issue. |

if we are to ban something that is harmful to our health it should be done worldwide...there are some goods and bads in eating pork, to be safe its best if you don't take it too often..if you are health conscious. But its hard to say bye-bye to those lop cheong's and bah kut teh's..... |

This is the most stupid and dumb question ever!
Let's ban cars cos sometimes they kill, oh btw let's ban electricity cos that can also kill.
Your silly article already says heat kills bacteria in meat, be it pork or whatever. If you have any working brain cells you will find that people do not consume sashimi pork or sashimi chicken for that matter.
If that research is true why are populations consuming pork so healthy? There must be very few countries with tougher food laws than the US and the FDA is extremely strict on these matters. This obscure US-based report which purports to be scientific in nature has never ever been validated or seriously considered by the FDA in the States. Why should Malaysia?
Stop asking stupid questions here as this has nothing to do with travel or Malaysia in particular. Try the riddles section. |

Kathy Griffin, can you kindly explain your purpose of posting this question? In Malaysia category only? Are you so intolerant of chinese eating pigs (or being DAP member, you know what I mean)? Maybe you could have post this question under Polls & Survey?
In any way, since you have posted the question, then I shall answer. NO. As what most users have stated, we shall have freedom to consume what we like to eat. Is it not enough that citizens are already being 'controlled' and 'restricted' in Malaysia? Now, we have to be deprived of some food as well? If you feel strongly about the dirtiness of one particular type of meat, then by all means avoid it at any cost. But it can't be forced on civilians. Some things are worth and should be banned like drugs and firearms but not food. Especially one of a more eaten poultry meat anywhere in the world. |

In the Islamic world, it was mentioned in the Holy Book not to eat pork, ham or bacon (anything related to pigs). People knew that this type of meat is not good for them & now I thank you for explaining the reason and proved the point.
Although Malaysia is a Muslim country, I don't think pork should be banned. There are many non-muslims living in the country plus many tourists. Food is a choice people make, and those who believe pork is noot good for them, they would not even think of having it. Just like alcohol, it is not banned but it is a personal choice of whether to have it or not. |

i think you should make your question more clearly by saying that it has nothing to do with Malaysia is a Muslim country and that it's entirely based on health factor.
i hate it when people ask this kind of question and mistaken it with Islamic reasons.
anyway, i'll give my own opinion as a Muslim. Like the first answerer said, if it's because of health reasons...the question should be for all countries rather than Malaysia alone. Other than that, like the other answerer said...food is everyone's choice...you can't simply ban them...it just wont' happen. Even though Malaysia is a Muslim country, everyone is free to practice any religion and free to eat anything they want (according to what their religion allows...'cause like Islam, pork and alchohol are some of the things we can't consume).
But if the World Health Organization (WHO) thinks pork should be banned worldwide...then Malaysia simply has to follow. |

Why Malaysia? Because the Muslims there are intollerant of other religions. This is nothing to do with health, it is just that you don't want pork eaten even by non Muslims in your country. |

Hey Nicola, place any kind of meat in a cup like that and "things" will crawl out of it. Even dead people will have "things" crawl out. It's called decomposition and its why we are not up to our heads in dead bodies. |

Should we ban any meat whenever there are studies to shown that it contains dangerous germs? In fact, anyone with common sence will know, all meat contains germs. That's why it need to be purposely cook.
5000 years ago, ancient people know nothing about germs. Which meant the forbiden of eating pork for Muslim got nothing with the germs. This reason is given by modern muslim whose themselves don't know what is the reason they are forbiden to eat pork. |

OK, I was a long time follower of those 'eat healthy new finds and I don't know what' columns in newspapers and found that within about a six month cycle they would always come to contradict previous statements. Thus, to-day drink green tea it contains lost of anti oxidants and blabla. Six month later: it was found that people who drink green tea regularly are 60% more prone to this and that cancer... (that's something I just made up now, but it goes along the lines!). So now they found that pork is unhealthy. Well, the study was commissioned by the largest chicken mean producer in the USA or what? Wait a couple of month and I am sure they will find that chicken meat is extremely bad for our health! By the way, if you consider what is fed to any lifestock these days, and how it is treated (alive and when dead), you will find very little good things for us. Fish and seafood is full of chemicals and pollution from the sea. Cows, pig and chicken are full of hormones and the meat preparations full of anti oxidants, colorings and blabla. Veggies are full of pesticides and fertilisers... if you do not grow your own veggies and rear your own chicken, and you want to live a health life stop eating and breathing right now! |

If pork is bad then it should be banned in everywhere, not just Malaysia. Another way is to educate people to cook pork thoroughly then it will be safe for consumption. It is same as chicken, if you do not cook it thoroughly and you will get salmonella and what more |

Hi, the tests were done in the States, Why not ask for the ban in USA? Why Malaysia? Malaysia pork should be better quality since there are not that much genetic test and engineering being done compared to the USA. |

As your news report (the one you quoted) mentioned, if the consumers were to eat pork, then cook it thoroughly before consuming it..
All meat whether poultry, pork, beef, lamb, fish have bacterias in and on them.. (its science general knowledge) and the safest way of getting rid of them is through proper cooking (heating process)..
That is why the report also stressed that any meat cooked medium rare or less should also be avoided..
Personally I don't think that the pork dishes served in Malaysia are of such terrible standard.. (If it really was, it would have been banned my now)
Just to quote what my French lecturer once said..
" I like to eat meat and the best type I like is medium rare.. but when I come to malaysia, most of the meat here are not just well done, they're burnt!"
Hehe.. :) which goes to show that Malaysians do cook their food properly and thoroughly.. unlike western countries (remember, the study was done in the United States?)
So... now after discussing my point, I shortly say that pork should not be banned from Malaysia.. not because of health reasons, or religous reasons.. because it has become part of our culture (Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures). And another reason for not banning pork is because pork is REALLY REALLY REALLY tasty..
Yum yum... :) |

Yeah agreed to ban despite loving pork so much, if this good for the country! Go ahead then! I hope you could also furnish info on mad cow diseased and influenza H5N1. Maybe we could once and for all ban beef, chicken, duck and what about lamb? Yeah, then we could go vegetarian and only organic one. |

I don't eat pork as much as some do... in fact, I avoid consuming them as much as I can, including other kinds of meat unless I have no choice (when I travel, etc.)...
I agree that they are 'filthy' and whatsoever, and to add to that, the process of killing the animals are also CRUEL and it involves a LOT of chemicals being released from their hormonal glands (any/all kinds of animals will do, which is later consumed by us humans (have you heard about people who got that tendency to be more violent than others when they are meat eaters? there are SOME truth behind it ---but I still stand by the fact that there is a psychological influence behind it too and besides, the element of 'anger' is fueled by element of heat ;meat, in traditional medicine).
Honestly, I don't think there's a need to ban pork in Malaysia (or any where else). Leave it to the consumers to make their choice. I'm sure they are well informed about these issues and let's not get too extreme with it.
ANIMALS, regardless of whether they are pigs, chickens or cows, contains bacteria and at times, viral infection (regardless of what reports they are)... and if you want to compare pigs to chicken, try observing what chickens eat per day at their farm/in the open... they are no different from what pigs eat too... Bird flu, on the other hand, is one of the biggest threat to mankind at present compared to other pig-borne diseases... does this make more sense?
*******
Guys, MALAYSIANS...
Stop being so rude and angry with people (foreigners?) asking provocative questions here, will you? Stop making this place (Malaysia) sound like some disease or something... its just a question... people are already avoiding this place (even the country itself) and let's not worsen it... I believe that there is good intention for this question to be posted up and let's not get too emotional and get back to our senses, shall we?
Honestly, I HATE this kind of remarks...
"Why do you ask this here"
"Why must you ask sensitive questions"
We all deserve to ASK and give answers... if you think this is a 'stupid' question as you claim, try answering questions in the R&S... tell them they're stupid to ask about God's existence and tell them they're stupid to ask about the Truth behind the name of our 'religion' and among others. The problem don't lie in the question, it is up to us to make it a problem in return. |

I am Muslim and i dont eat pork but i will have to answer
NO
to your question. Cause it wouldnt be fare for all thoese poeple who eats and love to eat pork. And all thoese pig farmers will lose their sole income.
Anyway if they were to ban it someone somewhere will be laying out plans to smuggle in the meat. |

Pigs are disgusting creatures that will eat anything (I mean ANYTHING, they are literally fed garbage) and they don't sweat.
The way I think of it is that if they don't sweat, where are all the pig-toxins? Stored in their muscle, which is what you're eating when you eat pork. Pig meat is also full of parasites (take a piece of raw bacon, put it in a glass jar with the lid on tight, and put it out in the sun for a while... there will be things crawling on the bacon).
Some people are not bothered by either of these things, saying that if you cook the meat enough the toxins are cooked off and the parasites are killed. I don't want to take the chance with the toxins and I don't want to eat dead parasites any more than I do live ones. Period! |
