Hi, the last time I went to Singapore I stayed at the Royal Plaza on Scotts because it's a nice hotel located right near Orchard Road which is where you want to be if you go to Singapore (great shopping). That hotel is a little pricey but I used a website that has a lot of hotels in Sinagpore and also allows you to search them by locations in the city you want. Here is their link, hope it is of some use to you: http://www1.tripter.com/city/sg/singapore.html?aid=306157

I would recommend the following

Allson Hotel (near MRT Station Bugis 5 - 10 mins/ City Hall 10 mins)
a) National Library - opp Allson Hotel
b) Brah Basah Complex - opp. Allson Hotel ("Book Mall" four storey selling books... Used book can be bought there)
b) Parco Bugis Junction 5 - 10 mins walk (Shopping Centre)
c) Bugis Village - 5 - 10 mins walk (a small alleyways selling clothing, foods)
d) Sim Lim Square - 15-20 mins walk (Cheap electronic items - PC, Laptop and digital camera are sold here.
e) Suntec City and Convention & Exhibition Centre - 15 mins walk or opp bus stop take bus no 133 alight at 2nd bus stop)
f) Raffles City Shopping Centre - 10 mins walk
g) CHIJMES - (5 mins) A heritage site, CHIJMES offers an exciting shopping, dining, leisure and entertainment experience.

Or

Le Meridien, Singapore (Somerset/Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station - subway)
a) Istana - Istana means 'palace' in Malay. It is the official residence of the President of the Republic of Singapore... The next Istana Open Houses have been scheduled for 6 August 2006 to celebrate National Day , 24 October 2006 to celebrate Deepavali & Hari Raya Puasa... Or see the Changing of the Guards ceremony is conducted every first Sunday of each month, at 6pm. It usually lasts about half an hour.
b) Plaza Singapura - Next to Plaza Singapoura...
c) Specialist Shopping Centre
d) Centrepoint Shopping Centre

Hotel 81 was suggested before. Well. This would be kind of the low end and normally located in the red light districts :)
Well. I would recommend that you check out any of the bigger hotel reservation websites including for example www.hotels.com, travel.yahoo.com or www.excelloz.com. The area I would recommend is around Orchard Road. Everything is there and everything else is easily reachable from there.

Singapore - anywhere is very convinience as long as it is located in the city center - orchard, Dhobi Ghoat, Little India, City Hall...They have a great MTR (subway) system, and taxies are very cheap. Plus the city center is very small and everything is so close to each other so you won't find any inconvinience if you stay in that area.
Hotels have various ranges of prices and classes, so it all depends on how much you are willing to pay.
