Singapore, a rude country? |
http://www.readersdigest.ca/mag/2006/07/polite.php
SIngapore is listed as one of the least courteous country in the world. Honestly as a Singaporean I'm quite disappointed. Any comments on this? |

my personal view is that nowadays most Singaporeans are too self centred. As more and more of us are getting better education and nowadays most retailers are focussing on "customer is always right" mindset and this made a lot of Singaporeans feel that as long as they paid for something, they have the right to shout at others. I always feel that parents should played more important role to educate the younger generations to be more courteous. Do you agree with this statement |

i'm a singaporean and i must say that singaporeans are really nice to non-singaporeans. we know how to show our hospitality towards our foreign visitors.
HOWEVER, some of us could be really damn rude. sometimes i wish that we could ship these ppl out and let them see the world, how courteous and kind people are towards each other regardless of where they're from. i dunno why they're like this.
BUT i have met really... a good handful of kind souls here. it's just a certain group of ppl who are really rude and hell, i'll TELL THEM OFF when i get the chance to -teach them a thing or too of being patient and considerate. i love meeting these ppl. really makes my day telling them off and humbling them after that.
i believe we can be rude. but i believe we were ruder THEN than now and hopefully, things would get better over the years. |

Aside from the taxi driver who wouldn't dropped myself and partner closer than100m from the gate of the race track and the usual perverts harassing a solo traveller on another visit, I would say it was a pretty normal experience in this sanitised environment. |

True, many people say Singaporeans are rude nowadays. However not everyone is rude. I personally think Singapore is still quite okay. |

I think every country has its black sheep, it is not unique to Singapore only. Many times, I have taken the lifts at Orchard Paragon where there are alot of 'ang mos'. Seldem they hold the lift for others.
Once I remembered, I was with my child, together with a foreigner (who stood beside the lift buttons). The lift was crowded and when I tried to squeeze my way out, the lady just stood around doing nothing. So when the lift door was about to close, I asked her to hold the button for me and guess what? She scolded me for being rude to make her hold the door! |

Money can change people's character. Many people think that just because they are rich, they have the right to be rude. Truth is, money can't buy manners. |

I first started visiting Singapore in the middle 70's and absolutly loved the city/country. However, over the years I do feel that the populace has hardened. It is still my favorite city in Asia but I think that the mass influx from Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malayasia has eroded some of the niceness of Singapore. Still love it tho' |

Singaporeans are straight forwards and impatient, but generally I don't consider them as rude.
In fact, they are the most helpful people I met so far. I had met twice traffic accidents (motor cycle) before. There were always Singapore's motorist would stop and offer uncondition help. Unlike I had one at neighbour country. The first thing the poeple who "offer help" asked was did I have enough money for the repair and the fine. |

When I was in Singapore, I noticed that Singaporeans hardly smile. When you do business with them, they do business as if they are dealing with a robot. No feelings. No human touch to it. Not even a thank you!
Here is a real conversation between my friends:
Friend 1: Ah, why don't we go out of the country for a break?
Friend 2: That's right! Why don't we go soul-searching in Singapore?
Friend 1: (speechless and just stared at Friend 2)
Friend 2: What? (confused)
Friend 1: (sighs) How can you do soul-searching in a country without a soul? |

Frankly, I wouldn't take this survey by RD as the "be all, end all". Take for instance, Hong Kong's classified as a little ahead of Singapore. No one could possibly agree with that!
And it's a little suspicious that NYC's rated no. 1.
I believe there's always a bad apple (ie, a rude person) amongst the good ones. I wouldn't take this survey to heart. |

I would choose my words as "Singaporeans are less schooled in the ways of etiquette" instead of dismissing them as rude.
Having come from an all-girls school and then going to a mixed tertiary institution, I was shocked during etiquette lessons that the kids from mixed schools are totally clueless about manners, etc, how you should sit and stand and talk, how to use the cutlery, what a gentlemen/lady should observe, how to apply makeup...
The whole problem started with our general social identity, are we East or West? The government wants us to be both, yet East and West is completely different in the area of etiquette, what is deemed to be polite behavior is confusing for the other. By all accounts, we have lost the ideals of the Eastern society, and yet, we have not fully adopted that of the West, we are nowhere in between. |

It gives one the impression of being rude. But I find that the Singaporean people I know - i.e. with whom I've managed to develop any kind of working relationship - are pleasant, kind, and rather generous.
I heard one Singaporean say the thing that makes Singaporeans abrupt is the way they are driven to work and produce. I don't know, but if I always had to feel I needed to be better, have more, and do more, I'd be grouchy, too. |
