The English language came from England.
Every other country that uses English have their way of using it.
Find me one country that speaks English the way England does?
I don't think you can, not even America, Canada or Australia.

Wah liao, why you don no ah? Sua ku or what? ;)

That's just an example of my bad Singlish :P.

Basically Singlish is colloquial Singapore English. Given that Singapore is a multi-racial and multi-cultural country, it is understandable why English can be bastardised to some extent with imputs from other cultures/races (including dialect groups).

Singlish seems to have gain a bad reputation lately but personally, I think it is a great way to connect with people in Singapore (especially those who arent that proficient in English). It basically reflects our multicultural and multiracial roots, and we need this given that Singapore is often reflected as a sterile society devoid of soul, culture etc. Knowing and using Singlish doesnt necessarily mean one is bad in speaking good standard English, IMO. It's just a matter of practising and knowing when to use one or the other at the right time or situation.

PS: I once IMed my American friend in Singlish..he couldn't understand what I was saying, lol.

Its Singapore's language, our identity... It shows how unique we are and noone in the world shares the same language as well. Gives us the sense of identity and Singlish is something Singaporeans can relate to and it feels home to listen to someone speak Singlish. Makes us feel one.

It is Singaporean's very and unique English.

And it is influenced by Chinese language.

And the way the Chinese people speak it very Singlish and toneless(no expression)..

Oh ya, there are lots of LAH, MAH, BAH, SIAN..

You can learn it from Chinese in Singapore. They are willing to teach you.

Singlish is cool sia....singlish represent the multi racial language of singapore...

warasouth
it's a colloquial form of English sort of like Creole English.

Very localised with Chinese, Chinese dialects, Malay and Indian words thrown into the mix

A typical sentence that may stump foreigners:
"Go where makan ah?"
Translation: Where shall we go for a meal?

"Referee kelong!" Usually yelled by irate fans during a soccer match
Translation: Referee's taking bribes

"Why you so bodoh one?"
Translation: Why are you so stupid?
