I don't know, not a smoker, but I'll ask you this: Gas has gone up and is almost $3.50 a gallon, do you think that'll make people stop driving and using mass transit? I'm guessing the answer will be a "no" in both cases.

i quit smoking since im 7 weeks pregnant & thats about 3months ago. Now i can save more money & lead a healthy life for me & my baby.
Believe me its not easy, but thank goodness my morning sickness prevents me from smoking as i cant stand any kind of smells..but then the urge to smoke is still there but when i think about my unborn baby it just makes me stronger to fight the desire.

what is so wrong about smoking anyway? i dont see the need to force people to stop smoking.

as a smoker myself, i dont smoke near children, pregnant women or babies. instead i will find a corner far from others to smoke. if it is about inhaling the smoke (as a second hand smoker), the air that we breathe isnt any cleaner with the fumes etc. anyways. but by finding my own corner away from the stated individuals, i minimise this effect.

i love smoking. i know it could kill me but then again, i would die from other things too..i am enjoying life while i can..

I smoke 20 sticks a day and have been doing it for the past 18 yrs. It does not bother me a bit about the price. Even when i was in Australia it was Aus Dollar 10 a pack and i still smoked. For your info, the ciggarete prices in Malaysia vary due to different brands. On top of that, there are syndicates who smuggle them into the country and sell for about RM 2 per packet. I know someone who has been caught by the customs twice, yet he still sells openly in his shop cause there are PEOPLE to bail him out.

I don't care what they raise the prices to. I like smoking and will continue,its a matter of personal choice. I agree with seperate or designated pubilc areas for us smokers. A complete ban on smoking ? Catch me if you can ! If you don't like smoking, don't smoke. But don't you dare try to tell me what to do.

you can stop a smoker from getting it. if is RM 100, people will still buy it maybe it can reduce no. of cigarettes

I doubt it, I told myself after the last increase in price that I would quit, but couldn't. They know we cant and so no matter how much it costs we will keep on smoking. A carton is right at $40. here. Insurance does not pay for drugs to help you stop. This is wrong! If it's to benefit your health and keep them from paying for cancer treatments they should cover this. Our rights to smoke in public has been taken away and I've heard they want to make it illegal to smoke in your own yard. This is prejudice. The constitution gives us all the right to the pursuit of happiness, but this is being taken away from smokers. Smoking makes us happy if we choose to smoke.Why should we have to give it up for the people who don't smoke? There should be seperate restuarants for smokers and non smokers, which should please everyone, I can't understand why we should have to give up something we enjoy to please others. Some people like to watch sports on TV others do not, but we are forced to watch it when there's nothing else on. Fair? I don't thind so. Sure we could just turn TV off, but this is not fair either.

For heavy smokers, increasing ciggy prices wont effect them the least bit...smoking is essential to em..
For light smokers, they would consider stopping coz since their smoking little amounts,might as well quit it off..

The increase in price actually cause a much more scary effect (on the not so rich people and also on youngsters who r curious)..
why? Coz instead of buying ciggies that are of a better filter, they choose to buy those cheap ciggy(the tobacco scrap is from the scums man)..this makes them inhale an even worse substance.. i know either way tobacco is tobacco but think realistically yea people...
Even worst, youngsters now turn to drugs(weed) coz its much much cheaper... and easy to get..

Im not against price increment, just the prices could go up to even RM20 ..people who smokes would want to smoke..
They'd just fine alternatives to get em cheaper ... smuggle,langkawi, buy in cartons..

so..no, even if u increase - chances of people stop smoking wont decrease..

I don't think it would...though i wish it would. i don't smoke and i hate people who smoke.

People say smoking is addictive...well, i'm sure it is as it's hard to stop. If people still want it, they'll care less about the price and will just buy the damn cigarettes.

Take drugs for example. it's not cheap to buy them...and yet, drugs addicts will do anything just to get the money to buy them.

Increasing the price isn't going to minimize the number of people who smoke. I don't know what will because smokers know smoking is harmful and yet they keep smoking. Even some stupid doctors smoke!! If they want to stop, they'll stop. The high price of cigarettes might make some stop...but probably just a small number of people...not all of them.

The price for a pack in Singapore is from $9.80 to $11.50 (depending on the brand).

Smoking is a very personal choice.

And one thing I know for sure is that there will be more 'beggers' asking for one cigarette cos they cannot afford to buy anymore but simply refuse to give up the idea. I witnessed a situation the other day near a 7-11. A girl bought a pack and started smoking just outside 7-11 and next moment a young boy (i think only 16 to 18 years old) walked up to her and ask if she can spare him 1 stick. I heard the girl telling him that if he wants to smoke then go buy himself and guess what the boy replied.... : very expensive..

I hardly buy any cigarettes... usually I would 'pao' other people's cos' that's the only time I'd smoke (when they invite me to). Heh heh heh...

So if the price is going to hike up, it would only make me a healthier person since my supplies are going to run short.

There's another alternative...

When cigarette prices hike up, many people will start buying homegrown tobacco and smoke with palm leaves... Locals call it 'rokok balut'... Its already happening to many people in the northern states, by the way.

I dont think it would make the slightest bit of difference especially in a place like Sarawak where a lot of cigarettes and beer are smuggled in anyway. All it would do is make even more people buy the smuggled goods and the government would lose even more in tax revenue.

I'm not a smoker, but I think it would make some people quit of course. But, since smoking is addictive, some people will pay whatever they charge because they are addicted.
