Let me tell you something that worth to read.
Japan has a culture and people very very different than any other place in the world. That's why only in Japan you really will feel like an stranger and then you'll see all your different behabiour and they will make you notice that you have costumes you didn't realiced before because in your country every body is the same!
Going to Japan is going to discover yourself. Then you'll notice what is a costume you aquired in your country and what it your essence.
Think about it.
My best places:
1) Hakone! it takes a weekend. Go with friends. Eat an egg. Use the boat. Nature is great. best on Fall and spring. Take the 3 day pass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/hakone...
2) Kamakura! lot of temples and big buda! You should go. 1 day. visit bigger temples. Visit buda before 5 pm.

3) ODAIBA! That island you should visit. 1 day. Please meet the modern museum eith the huge earth and the crystal. Skip the tv station or let for the return. Visit the big shopping at the end.

4) In Tokyo take a the a boat trip from HINODE PIRINE (Tokyo) hasta ASAKUSA (temple and you can by a lot of traditional Japanese things here, don't miss it) at the morning.

Then in front is the ashashi beer factory ask for tourist guided visit and for your free beer!. And the Tokyo Tower sure!
*Buy at the 100 or 200 yen stores. Very convenient. 100 yen an umbrella! Sport clothes for 200... small gift to bring too.
*Museums: Visit UENO station at Tokyo
*China town at Yokohama city! And you can't skip the land mark tower of Yokohama and the park at the end.
I love Yokohama more than Tokyo and it is just a ride in Train away.
