What's acceptable fashion in the Philippines? |
I was told by my parents that many American tourists are kidnapped, held hostage, or stolen from in the Philippines. What can I wear in the Philippines? I would still like to look nice, but I don't want to attract any unnecessary attention. Additional Details Just to address some of your responses: me and my family ARE Filipino. I am a Filipino American, and that is just what my parents told me as I was growing up. |

I'm a filipino teen that lives in the states. When i visit i deliberately wear clothes i know would help me blend in a bit more. Don't wear mini-skirts, especially jean skirts. And if you make that not so good choice, certainly don't wear it with a tube top. Pants are usually what i wear to the mall, jeans, it's air conditioned, so you wont have problem with heat.
When just hanging around the house with the cousins, shorts are good, just no daisy dukes. I'm usually too hot to care what my clothes look like, i just want to be comfortable. I wear shorts and a shirt, nothing tight because you sweat and you just feel gross. Flip Flops are a must. Capris are also good, lots of people there wear them. Just try not to draw attention to yourself.
Oh, and of course, A HAIR TIE. You'll need it. |

If you'll be staying in the city (Makati, Manila and the general Metro Manila area), malls are pretty safe so you could get away with wearing anything.
If you're the religious type, make sure to veer away from skirts and shorts in church.
Provinces are much more conservative, so jeans and a tee would be okay.
If it's summer (and it can get really hot) sleeveless tops and tank tops are acceptable.
Party wear can get pretty wild, especially if it's a weekend in a nice place like Greenbelt or Eastwood. You can wear short dresses and all the jewelry you desire.
If you don't know what to wear, keep it simple. Jeans and a tee, a plain-looking watch and maybe a baseball cap to keep the sun out.
Have a nice trip! |

Not all "Americans" are being kidnapped. Most foreigners was kidnapped because they always like to go to isolated places or islands where there no military visibility. Big cities is a good place for foreigners.
You can wear anything you like, since we are in a tropical weather a summer dress/outfit (jeans, shorts, tops...etc.) will do. Always bring with you a trusted companion or relatives with when you go out...:) |

hi. actually the news stated it that way. however, life in the Philippines is not a wreck of kidnappers, hostage takers etc..I can advise you some of things ive observed,as i lived in the Philippines since I was a child. well, firstly, if you plan on visiting Philippines, write down the places you want to visit in a note. secondly, have your own map locator. Thirdly, surf net and find ways on how to go to certain places you want to visit. Fourth, communicate to friends and chat friends or forums to verify your search. Fifth, if you can, look for a friend or anyone who can guide you anywhere here in the Philippines, do so. Sixth, this is the time where dresscode comes in. Try to wear simple tops and jeans. A blouse and jeans per se. Whatever you wear will be suspected so it matter less. Bad guys just want to do bad things as they pleased so they are unpredictable. Last but not the least, it is very important that you only bring with you what is necessary to your destination. Example, you are to stroll to malls. Just bring enough bills to your wallet and keep some in your socks or undershirt for any emergency bills. Do not bring all your stuffs like or your bills, all your credit cards, all your phones..etc..Be simple, wear simple, bring simple things for safety. Hope this helps and relieves you. |

Pardon me but your parents' tale is a bit exaggerated. Incidence of kidnapping foreigners is one to a million. Anyway, there is no standard fashion in the Philippines. Anything goes in style, specially teens. What you see in the States can also be seen in the Philippines. If you don't want to catch unnecessary attention, simplicity is the thing you must always remember. |

Think simple, clean, cool, natural beauty without all the bling. Avoid too much jewelry and expensive looking watches. The less bracelets and necklaces the better; especially shiny metal ones.
No heavy makeup. Eyeliner is okay but avoid red to bright lipstick.
A nice fitting blouse, shirt, shorts or skirt, and sandals are good. Avoid name brand clothing with logos that stand out. No sweaters or anything meant for wearing in cold weather. Don't wear jeans if the weather is too hot for you; you wouldn't want to be caught sweating near bad company.
Avoid carrying large purses; use small pouches. Hide your cellphone; that's a hot favorite item for thieves.
Keep it simple and reduce your English in public to avoid possible attention from the wrong crowd. |

You have nothing to worry about. I was a little worried myself with people staring at me at the beginning of my many visits.
They are only curious. That's all, no more, no less.
If you look nice, its okay.
Try not to act like its your first visit. That is how you attract scam artist. |

Simple clothings are fine (jeans, shirt, tank tops, crop pants) and make sure it's good for hot weather but do not show too much skin...
keep your fancy stuff (jewelries, cellphone etc.)away from public sight so as not to attract those bad people. Never let go of your purse.
Wear fancy clothings on formal occasions. At the mall or afternoon variety shows
, you can pretty much see how people dress up so you'll have idea what's the lates fashion.
Philippines is a pretty place with good people
and just like any other country, there are some isolated kidnapping cases but don't let it stop you from visiting Philippines. It would help to always have a filipino friend with you who know the area pretty much and can advice you where to go and not. |

You have a much better chance of being kidnapped in Los Angeles than you do in the Philippines.
If your white or black (non-Filipino) there is nothing you can do to stop all the attention you will get. Its not negative attention, Filipinos are just a curious, but they are very polite and very hospitable so just smile a lot.
Dress it what is comfortable to you. But people don't walk around in shorts and bright Hawaiian type shirts.
Just dress the same as you would in the summer in the in the states but bring some jeans slacks and skirts. Save shorts for the beach.
If you do get kidnapped the U.S. Marines are here, treaty or no treaty we will be blast-in the hell out of anybody who kidnaps you. |

In cities like Manila their fashion is little different from that of the States/Canada/etc, so pretty much what you'd wear normally. (Assuming you are from the States.) Getting pickpocketed is a concern, but your choice of clothing should be more dictated by making sure you don't get too hot. |

wear decent clothes and don't overdo your jewelries and make- up. Just be nice to everyone and they will be nice to you as well.
