What is this Ms. Universe Question? |

Mike's Girl

i am a Filipina transplanted in the land of the almighty dollar. English may be my everyday medium now but my love for my mother language (Tagalog) and my native tongue (Bisaya) remains very strong and unchanged. And i do use it at every chance i get. i am so proud of my heritage that i seek opportunities to talk about my beloved country...when people ask me "from where are you?"...i just don't say "from the Philippines".....i go on to tell them "it's in Asia...a very small country w/ lots of beautiful people and places...a paradise really...you should visit there someday...English is widely spoken there...and some Spanish too...we're very tourist-friendly." That, essentially, is how i display my country pride.
That's the true essence of being a Filipino....you think, feel & act like a Pinoy, no matter where you are. Yeah, proud to be a Pinay too!!! |

what's the essence of being a Filipino?
yay! parang pang Ms. Universe na tanong ah. the essence of being a Filipino, sa tingin ko lang, is that we're survivors and we learn things fast, we adapt quickly, magaling dumiskarte--may takot sa Diyos pero shet sa kapal ng mukha! maraming talent, bihira ang may virtousity. proud tayong maging Pinoy but we're not proud having the Philippines as our country and its present government as our government. Mabuhay ang mga noypi! |

Just me!

Iba lang talaga ang dating nating mga pilipino at walang papantay sa ating mga pinoy! masayahin kasi tayong lahat at marunong tayong makisama sa mga tao.

At last, a sensible question in YAP!
The essence of being Filipino is being
1.having the honor to sing the Lupang Hinirang with pride. It is one of the few national anthems with deep background.
2. having the privilege to enjoy beautiful beaches and nature almost for free. almost all provinces have several of them.
3. unique culture and traditions like fiestas, weddings, harana.. (although there are some in LAtin americas)
4. simple life..at least for me..although i have access to modern technologies..i can still enjoy the simpliness of Filipin life..sipping coffee while watching my mother feeding the chickens and goats..taking afternoon nap beneath the mango tree...talking a walk in the beach in the afternoon..picking up mango fruits, avocado, caimito, sinegwelas in our backyard..cannot be compared to a complicated life in the city... |

We are idealists with no roots - and unless we find that common cause to rally upon, we are nothing more than nomads and faceless wanderers...with all those good qualities indicated in the above answers. |

I think the importance of being a filipino is the beautiful traits that we filipinos have, they say we are like bamboos that are pliant but strong and sturdy. We are survivors and if we were to be put in such places, it´s easy for us to adapt! We may love foreign things and maybe even aspire to be one but it is undeniably true that wherever we go, whatever happens the filipino essence is still in us!
MABUHAY!!!
teka is this a part of a gimik for the independence day!?^^ |

You should be proud to be Filipino - I plan to move to the Philippines soon, I am from Europe, and I find the Philippines the best place in the world - you people are so friendly, helpful and very family orientated.
Perhaps the Europeans should take a lesson and learn how to live and stop complaining all the time !!
I go to Bacolod, and I am looking forewards to it.

The essence of being a Filipino is accepting your roots and being proud you are a Filipino. Not asking what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country to improve the lives of your kababayan. |

Hospitality is not uniquely Filipino. it is common among obsequious people wanting something in return. i am a Filipino and i am ashamed of this Filipino trait of ours. i was in a fast ferry last summer with my aunt and her British husband. the Brit ordered tuna sandwich not knowing that sandwich in the Philippines means mayo-filled. when he took a bite, he slammed it back down on the tray and told the stewardess he doesn't eat mayo. at the same time he told the stewardess to give him back the tip he previously gave her. And the stewardess was still all nice and courteous to the Brit. She gave back the tip and reimbursed the Brit for the uneaten sandwich that he already took a bite of. my point is, this scenario happened because the complainant was white. had it been a Filipino, he'd have got the cold shoulder from these rude waitresses and stewardesses. i have complained a million times about bad service in the Philippines but i don;t get attended to just because I'm a Filipino. Yes Filipinos are hospitable...but selectively hospitable. Filipinos are not hospitable to fellow Filipinos and to blacks. Filipinos discriminate. they are only nice to people whom they think are rich. so should i be proud of Filipino hospitality? hell NO!
but there's one Filipino trait which I guess is uniquely Filipino! and I'm very proud of it. it's our OPENNESS and PASSIVITY. the Philippine culture is very colorful because of this.
We imbibe everybody else's culture. we love American pop music. We have accepted sushi, we watch and idolize Korean soap opera actors and actresses. We once went crazy over F4. we love Michael Jordan and David Beckham and Leila Barros. We set aside our Lambanog cuz there's vodka and tequila on the table. We accepted the Western Christian faith. We have a lot of Chinese, Spanish and Indian words in our lexicon. We have Chinese foods just anywhere around the corner. We even do the dragon and lion dances. We have reached the top of Mt Everest even though we don;t have Alpine mountains. These and more have been instrumental in making enriching the Philippine culture and at the same time retaining our true roots.
However, this trait sometimes works against us. It is not very easy for a local product to compete in the market because it has been inculcated that imported stuff are better than local ones. we don't promote and support Filipino music, movies and TV shows cuz it is believed that doing so is jologs. We think saying "puta" is unrefined and saying "b#tch" is cool.
Having said that though, i still think it is still good to be OPEN, OBJECTIVE and PASSIVE. it is this trait that has enabled our overseas contract workers to adapt and thrive in foreign soil. Our passivity is the fuel that ignites the Filipino passion and that drives the Filipino professionalism. we are not like Koreans who can't live without kimchi, who eat kimchi alongside spaghetti. who wear high-heeled shoes on beaches. we are not like Americans and Japanese who can't stand slow motion. We are not like Chinese who can't live without saving enough for their life fifty years hence. We are not like the French who insist that everyone should understand "Bonjour". We accept things as long as they're good and they become part of our lives. And we become happy! |

To ignore financial responsibilities and most of all, not paying debts. "What is yours is ours, and what is mine is mine". I have a Filipino wife for 20 years and she has never had a loan repaid without anguish or forfeiture. Filipinos are famous for misunderstanding things and getting facts all screwed up. It is no wonder there is 3% Chinese population in the Philippines, but they control 70% of the economy. Being always late is something Filipinos laugh about all the time, but it is a serious problem and one of the reasons the country is a basket-case.
Foreign men love the Philippines and say such nice things about it, because where else can an old fart like me go and sleep with so many young cute females who speak English and treat us so nice....see how many foreign woman praise the Philippines with such genuine compliments. Filipino men are little candy-as*es, and are extremely effeminate. No wonder the Filipinas prefer foreign men. |
