Bayan Ko (My Country) compares the Philippines, yearning for its independence (from America at the time the song was composed), to a bird that cries when caged and denied of its right to fly. An old song from the early 1920s, it has been repeatedly used through the years to express the central Filipino sentiment, its people's strong desire for freedom.

1. "Bayan Ko" - this song has accompanied every struggle in our history since the turn of the century...tugs my heart (and patriotic spirit) everytime I hear it....what do you expect from a kid with activist parents & grandparents?

2. "Tanging Yaman" - as we have already established, this is both a love song and a church song....beautiful, soul-searching lyrics

3. "Sapagkat Kami ay Tao Lamang" - this song is about human imperfections...about the power of love over obedience to laws, including God's commandments. It justifies our fatal transgressions by saying we're but human and therefore weak and imperfect.

timeless. still get goosebumps whenever i hear it.

na kumot at unan mo
II

over-all translation (w/ tweaking):
I wish I could be your pillow and your blanket so everynight I could share the bed with you. Yes, I'm jealous coz I'd rather you'd need only me instead of the pillow & blanket.

I wish I could be that lucky hankie so I could always touch your cheeks. But most of all, I'd rather you use me as your pillow and your blanket.

Refrain: You're my dream, my only dream. And it is my fervent desire that you are dreaming of me too.

Lucky is the glass that touches your lips; I wish it's my kisses instead. But most of all, I'd like to be your pillow and your blanket (coz that's the closest I can really get to you).

*Sung by the Apo Hiking Society. nice catchy tune and cute lyrics too

Ako ay Pilipino is my all time favorite. Doesn't it stir up something in you when you sing it? It never fails to get the goosebumps from out of me dahling.

Ako ay Pilipino,
Ako ay Pilipino
Isang bansa isang diwa
Ang minimithi ko
Sa Bayan ko't Bandila
Laan Buhay ko't Diwa
Ako ay Pilipino,
Pilipinong totoo

AKO AY PILIPINO,
AKO AY PILIPINO
TAAS NOO KAHIT KANINO
ANG PILIPINO AY AKO!

Its a folk song. It tells you of your neverending love for your spouse. I really love this song no matter how old it is.
Its just so romantic.

Kung Mawawala Ka (Gary V, Zsazsa P--not so much the other version)

I'm a karaoke junkie, and duets are fun, so I enjoy listening and singing to this and a few others. I can't pick a favorite...but this oughta do for the moment.

Mine are.....hmm...

Paglisan - Color it Red
This song always reminds me of my High School graduation.
And this is the song I'd like to be played in my burial, lol.

Habang may Buhay - After Image
I just love the voice of the guy who sang this. And it's so sentimental...makes me want to hug somebody, lol
This is the second song I want in my burial. =)

Ikaw Lamang - Zsa Zsa Padilla
But the duet of Jano Gibbs and Jaya made me like this song more. It just sounds very romantic for me.
And I like this song to be played on my first date. lol jk! Oops! Buking ba? hehe.

Sana Maulit Muli - Regine Velasquez
I loved this song since I was a kid when I still adore Regine.
I also want this song in my burial...I don't know what's with me today...

Sa Ugoy ng Duyan - the original singer...I think the girl with the high voice?
I don't know why but I just feel sentimental whenever I hear this song. And one friend told me once that there was a Filipino high school exchange student who sang this song in a school in Japan. Though the Japanese didn't understood the words, the song brought tears to some of them. I was touched by the story.

lol I mentioned 5 songs, if that's ok. I equally love them all.

Walang Hanggang Paalam of Joey Ayala...
All his songs are meaningful and touching... The others are so ethnic though...

Di ba tayo’y narito
upang maging malaya
at upang palayain ang iba
ako’y walang hinihiling
Ika’y tila ganoon din
sadya’y bigyang-laya ang isa’t-isa

[chorus]
Ang pagibig natin ay
walang hanggang paalam
at habang magkalayo
papalapit pa rin ang puso
kahit na magkahiwalay
tayo ay magkasama
sa magkabilang dulo ng mundo

Ang bawat simula ay
siya ring katapusan
may patutunguhan ba
ang ating pagsinta
sa biglang tingin
kita’y walang kinabukasan
subalit di-malupig ang pag-asa

[chorus]
Ang pagibig natin ay
walang hanggang paalam
at habang magkalayo
papalapit pa rin ang puso
kahit na magkahiwalay
tayo ay magkasama
sa magkabilang dulo ng mundo

[chorus]
ang pagibig natin ay
walang hanggang paalam
at habang magkalayo
papalapit pa rin ang puso
kahit na magkahiwalay
tayo ay magkasama
sa magkabilang dulo ng mundo
sa magkabilang dulo ng mundo

I left the Philippines when I was 10... but there's this song that goes: Ikaw ay akin
at akoy sa'yo..... lalalalalalalalalallalallalallallallalal...
As the years go by... the lalala part is taking over the lyrics of the song more and more. I have no idea what the title of it is. I absolutely love the melody of it.
