It`s not a word per se, but I`ve found myself copying my coworkers and students and going "heeeeeeee?" all the time. It sounds kinda like the English "hey," but much more drawn out, and it`s used to express disbelief or surprise. It`s so versatile, a reply suitable for almost any statement. An everday observation can be answered with a short, polite, "heee." An interesting fact that`s new to you can be answered with a inquisitive "heeeeee?" And a shocking statement can be answered with an exaggerated look of disbelief and an extra long "HEEEEEEEEEE?!?!?!?"

"I went to the grocery store yesterday. - "heeeee."

"Actually, my country also has four seasons, just like Japan." - "Heeeeee?"

"I may look like an attractive young woman, but I`m really a man!" - "HEEEEEEEEE?!?!?!?"

Funny how in north america even very yound kids use the F word.
Are they brain dead?
If any child in japan is shouting a word that describes the particular thing which adults couple do as frequently as children in canada do, then that kid will go to a mental institution or something.
