I think it's safe to say that most national costumes in most countries come from peasants since they used to be (and still are in some countries) the largest group of population. I just don't understand why it's something to be criticized.
By the way, I am not Filipino but I do own two barongs:) |

we can't erase the fact that our ancestors were mainly peasants (and i stand corrected if I am wrong). and since the criticism comes from someone with no costume to associate with his country, i can just laugh at the irony =) |

I live in Hawaii, but I am American with an ethnicity of Full Filipino. As far as the Barong being criticized as "peasant's clothes" ...
Of course it's not! The Barong counts as traditional clothing, and a part of the Filipino culture. This opinion of being "peasant clothing" is just an opinion. If it isn't, this man is terribly mistaken.
To call the Barong peasant clothes, is like calling Japanese kimono an over sized dress fit for Halloween only. Or for the non Asian community, like calling Kilts - ridiculous man skirts.
Also, the Barong isn't necessarily worn every day, so it's not like everyone is on a farm, wearing them. They wear t-shirts, etc.
Its NOT peasant clothing. It's culture!! |

Actually all kind of national costumes around the world have their origins in working peoples like peasants 'sunday' fine clothes, in the old days of history 95% of mankind made their living as peasants or handymen and wore their formerly handmade sunday clothes, not everyone was able to afford this dresses.
So be proud to wear something like the people who are the mothers and fathers of the national culture in their country |

That is really very funny. I own a Barong and whenever I wear it here People ask me 'where did you get that lovely shirt.' Most, if not all, 'National Costumes' started their lives as "peasant" clothing but in this day and age the 'peasants' can no longer afford their creations. |

Dang! many of our countrymen have not even owned a genuine Barong Tagalog.
Anyone who is living in this era and has seen the latest barong tagalogs would not for a moment think that they are peasant's clothes.
The guy might have heard about the persistent legend that barongs were mandated by the Spaniards during the Spanish era as a way to make sure the locals were not concealing weapons. This legend has been refuted by sociologists as well as many historians. |

I disagree! I have one made of pineapple fibre of some sort. Complete with two embroidered peacock designs. Very elegant to look at. Except I wish for a cotton Barong, as it is smoother to the touch.
Oh by the way! I was born and raised in Canada and am over 6'3'' tall. |

well, they can say what they think... perhaps they do not know enough...
don't they know how much skill is required to weave one?... anyways, i believe the barong is for us, Filipinos to appreciate :) it suits the climate we have and wonderfully expresses our creativity and love for intricate details :) |

Those people are clueless or ignorant or maybe don't have identities. Barong is a symbol, a culture. Filipinos don't wear them everyday. They are used for special occasions (weddings, etc.) and for those in foreign land, using Barong connects them to their homeland. Barong is made from quality cloth (pina fiber and jusi) and intricate designs are made by hand or machine and it costs a lot... not really affordable on a "peasant's" salary. |
