items in Thailand are really cheap.I've been there and know what I am talking about. One very important thing which a few take for granted as waste of money is TRAVEL INSURANCE. Take my advice and Insure Yourself. A young lady from my country had an accident (broke her pelvis, ribs and other parts) while in Cambodia, she was not insured and was sent to a local clinic; they demanded €2,000 just for attending to her and another €15,000 to airlift to Thailand. The Red Cross Society of Malta had to intervene and a group of local paramedics were dispatched to Cambodia to get the girl back. Visit timesofmalta.com and check under backissues going back 3days to get further information. I am not kidding. So don't take what you can find in Thailand, but take what you the least likely that you need ..travel insurance.

If you are American, European, or African, you will need to bring your own condoms. The ones in Asia are small and very poor quality.

shorts and T shirts, soft shoes and some good walking boots.
decent camera, Quad band phone and one of those electronic dictionaries which you can download to your phone.
Plenty of Baht, change your money in Thailand at the airport, not in your home country.
Read the guide books and take a decent one with you, rough guide/lonely planet.
Have a pair of long trousers for visiting temples and to stop the Mossies biting at night.
Have drunk the water in Thailand and it is OK.
You can buy clothes and shoes in Thailand very cheap and yes they do have some tall people here!
Chiang Mai is great and there are many good treks and home stays you can go on.
You will make many friends and have a brilliant time.

Cash. You can buy anything you need cheaper there than at home. 35 cents gets you a beer
20 bucks gets you a nice hotel room (don't spend any more because you will hardly ever use it.) when you can't find a hostel

Walk off the plane with just the clothes on your back and your wallet.

Helen
Condoms is a definite must and as you will probably spend most of your time in shorts a t-shirt clothes shouldn't be a problem . I'd be more concerned about medical supplies , temporary tooth filling , headache tablets and things like that .

A month will pass very quickly and i'm sure you can find all you need there but without knowing what it's called locally it could prove a nightmare getting a simple paracetamol !

Take alot of t-shirts and shorts,mp3 player, bug repellent.

Have a friend with dengue fever at the moment it's not pleasant,so it pays not to get bitten.

Apart from that ,you don't need to much.Just pack one or 2 sweaters ,as they are nice to wear if you're sleeping on a bus or train,or perhaps going to the cinema or something,as the air -con can be cold.

You can find clothing that will fit you ,i'm 6ft 2 ,live here and have no problems finding things to fit.

Firstly, it would depend on what time of the year you are visiting Thailand. Is it going to be hot and dry, or hot and rainy?

Secondly, in my humble opinion Thailand is not a country where you backpack and what I mean by that is that it is just way to hot to carry a large backpack and hardly anyone pitches a tent here.

You say you are going to stay in hostels so you don't need much anyways. A light cover like a bed sheet for the dry and hot season. A slightly heavier blanket for the monsoon season.

But then again hostels, guesthouses and other accommodation usually provide those anywhere.

Everything you need should fit into a small size backpack. Bring a pair of shorts, a pair of light long loose fitting pants, two shirts (preferably long sleeved), a pair of walking shoes, a pair of sandals or flip flops, couple of underwear.

Sunglasses, small flashlight, spare batteries, money belt, very light raincoat, zipper bags (bag passport and other valuables), wallet, condoms (Asian Condoms may be too small).

Everything should fit in a small sized backpack. Buy toothpaste and shaving cream in Thailand because you will be carrying everything as handbag in the plane to Thailand and airport security usually takes it from you anyways depending on from where you are flying in.

If you find yourself missing something, you can buy anything in Thailand. You won't have a problem finding shorts but long pants may be more difficult.

bad_dog
everyone keeps mentioning pharmacy stuff, there are Boots Pharmacies all over Thailand now as well as other chemists.
you'll be able to get stuff for your 6ft size in thailand.
been going there for the last 10 years and never had travel insurance, getting it this year tho' as i think i've pushed my luck far enough.
just take a good sence of humour with you and have a great time!
PS not a lot of hostels out there, its all guest houses!!

Just the basics, good boots and decent walking socks, decent walking trousers and a pac-a-mac etc..a security wallet may be useful, and some deet. Just one or two changes of clothes as you can by all your clothes in the markets and as they're made for locals they're very light and cooler than most stuff you'll buy before you go. A mossie net, travellers style. Get a padlock when you're there for hostel lockers too.

sweetcat
so hot take should easy clothrs

Jai Ho :)
condoms and vodka
im from here and thats all ya need,
buy all your equipment over here it's so cheap

Kimmie
well tbh i'd firstly say a spare wallet with a few coins ...
why you ask ?
because if you suddenly get attacked and they demand for your wallet you give em a fake one.
it will be obvious that your a tourist (i think ) and that means your highly likely to become a viticm.

hope you have fun ! :)

I would bring water purification tablets if you aren't a native to the area. Never drink water from an area you arent native to.
