Everyone perceives love differently, but according to "The Five Love Languages"by Gary Chapman, people generally perceive acts of love in one of five ways:

(1) Words of affirmation (statements of appreciation and compliments)

(2) Quality time (enjoying time spent together)

(3) Receiving gifts

(4) Acts of service (helping out)

(5) Physical touch

Not that a person can't appreciate all of these things, but everyone usually has an emphasis on one, possibly two, areas. You might care less about receiving a gift, but get really cranky if you don't get quality time with your partner.

Observe your partner and notice which of these techniques s/he seems to respond best to. You might also take cues from how s/he expresses love to you. A person who feels loved when she receives a gift may give gifts as an expression of love. But the key is to find the "love language" of your partner and learn to "speak" it.
