Good question, but I don't know if it is the 'right' place to ask because this (Malaysia) country is where you don't know what is best to do for the government or society.
The government wants its people to support them, to work along with them and to go through 'proper channels' in order to reach what they call a source, a 'right' way of doing things. But sometimes, all of this turns out into a disaster.
In my family's case, we were under a death threat and we had gone through hell to work along with the police and including 'prominent' government officers... what do we get in return? An insider from the police headquarters told us that there are officers now trying to frame us for pushing them to work harder.
Such is the consequences for going through the 'right' channel. We were also being told that justice will only be served for the 'prominent' members of society (btw, wtf if prominence in their own definitions?)
I say, JFK was probably a good man... he said those things to relevant people in his time, to people whom he envisioned as future leaders of his nation but unfortunately, it doesn't work that way anymore...
We were only humble citizens being responsible for our society ills and had done certain things in the good name of our country, but what do we get in return? Its not that we ask for some kind of rewards or sort of compensation for being good, law abiding citizens but at least, our basic values and rights as citizens in this country and not to be treated as pariahs for being 'good' people.

Think about how Sabahans are being abused by 'Malaysians'. I bet Gindy can elaborate more for you... so, coming back to the question if we should not ask what the country can do for us but what we can for the country... I think it is standing up for what we believe in and for nothing else but honest, straightforward TRUTH. |

Thats a pretty strange and undemocratic thought.
In a democratic nation WE ARE the country and "the country" owes the people things like protection, freedom of speech and equal rights for the rich AND the poor..
If "the country" doesnt stick to the priciples its founded on, why should anybody care to maintain that status quo rather than fight for the reestablishment of its original constitution??
You can be sure Kennedy would not have held that speach today. |

The United States Peace Corps was created as a direct result of President Kennedy's challenge, and so I think there is no better way to meet it than by joining the Peace Corps and being an ambassador of the United States to people in other parts of the world who are in need of assistance. I plan on joining the Peace Corps as I'm finishing my Graduate degree in teaching English as a second language, and hopefully using my skills to do the world some good in the name of the USA. |

What does this country want me to do? I pay my taxes and I vote. This is my way to contribute to this country and so far they have accepted what I have contributed. Besides joining the military, what does my country want me to do for the country. |

Set an example by having a strong work ethic. The thing missing today in young people is the ability and willingness to work for something. I dread the day when they realize why they have nothing of value because they didn't work for it. |
