I swear, there's someone
1. Among the Badjao who can swim better than Michael Phelps. Man, they're thrown to the sea as soon as birth, for Christ's sake! There's no swimming experience greater than that.
2. Among the snatchers in Quiapo who can take the record in hurdles. Or relay (steal the baton of the other team without anyone noticing it.) Just shout "Ayan nang parak!"/"The cops are here!" together with the signal gunshot and they're gonna run like there's no tomorrow. Hell, maybe JUST the gunshot would work. EDIT: Or maybe they can just run away with the gold. Literally.
3. Among the gangsters in Tondo who can beat the living lights out of anyone in ANY contact sport. Imagine how many golds that would be.
4. Among the kargadors in the Pier who can get the weightlifting gold. Have you seen how much weight those little guys can carry? |

Their performance were pretty decent. What can we actually do...we are short of being a match with the bigger contender.
There are still more Olympics to come, we may not be lucky in Beijing...lets keep our hopes high in London 2012. |

horrible, 90+ million people and not one medal and countries with literally only thousands of people have won medals. Afghanistan won a medal |

There is no doubt in my mind that somebody out of the 91 million people in The Philippines has some natural talent in Gymnastics. If you look at what those "hard body" sex bomb dancers, EB babes, and a variety of other accomplished dance groups can do, its plain to see that the physical ability is there. It just needs some prioritizing and focus to find and nurture the prospective talents. I've watched guys run up a coconut tree for buko with little or no effort at all. You can't tell me those same guys can't learn to do some fancy stuff on some ropes, rings, or bars. |

Embarrassing. Even Mongolia or Jamaica with umpty citizens got medals.
Like Jack says, try some sports other than the traditional Filipino ones.
You have thousands of sexbomb dancers...
You have lots of water - why not Kayak, sailing, water polo, swimming, diving, etc
You play volleyball in school - volleyball and beach volleyball....
Lots people in Mindanao have guns - how about target shooting? Send some MILFs and NPAs over. [Bow & arrow was a good start]
Nuff said. |

there is just no way a filipino athlete with such talent can get a n international exposure without monetary sponsors, "sigurista" that term for most sponsors (big companies) out there. they rather put money on paquiao look at his shorts, rather than an emerging talent, and also blame the filipino communities by not patronizing other sports until it became a fad. go ask youself how many basketball games have you've watch and how many weightlifting, gymnastic or diving competion have you seen? |

though i agree with most of the answers here, let us also not forget that our athletes are doing the best they can. give them the credit that is due to them. let's say that there are many people who have better skills than them, that would be great. however, let's not take their efforts for granted. |

A lot of great responses here . I just wish the government officials in the Philippines, those in-charged of Sports Education, sports teacher would read all these responses. I just hope that they just wont say "Lets pray to the Lord that it will happen" or "In God's time", or "God willing".
Filipinos should not wait for God, but ACT ON IT and DO IT. |

why don't they allow sepak takraw in the Olympics? or even chinese garter? I guess Filipinos would win lots of gold medals in those sports... jejeje... and as you said, "height is not an important factor in winning!"... |

Our government may have not realized that Filipinos will of course would excel in any endeavor may it be in academics, sports, or whatever...I believe that. Why not our government offer training/scholarship grants then? 12% EVAT will go a very long way if not mismanaged, our govt's financial coffer has enough. I am just grateful I am lucky I got a scholarship in the EU. |

I don't know how they choose representatives. I really don't know where do they get these athletes. Mabuhay ang mga lampa! |

To be frank, they were horrible. I guess they were too overconfident? They can talk about the so-called pressure they experience in the Olympics all day on TV but that isn't going to help. So instead of being focused, they first promote themselves in advertisements. What do you get? An overconfident egotistical maniac who would make up conspiracy theories because they did not win gold. STOP QQING GODDAMNIT!! |

They did their best and went as far as their skills could take them. It's a big honor to represent the country; there's no shame in losing to the world's best. Just try harder the next time around. |

I'd say that the performance of the Filipino athletes are what are to be expected of them. And you are correct, the last time a Filipino won, was in Atlanta, a controversial silver by Onyok in boxing. But just the same with the funding & support that we have for sports in the country, we only have a fighting chance in the non-team sports with weight divisions, boxing & taekwondo having the better odds.
But do not forget, I think the Philippine team for wushu, a demonstration sport for this olympic games, is assured of 3 bronze medals! So add wushu to that short list.
Taekwondo won 2 bronzes when it first came out a demo sports in its home country-Korea.
But wait for bowling to be included & also billiards.
And boxing you cannot discount as this is the sport where the Philippines has the most olympic medals so far. |
