I have 3 hometowns and I get taxis pretty much everywhere:
London:Black cabs
New York:Yellow of course and as someone else said it's so good because you can use credit cards in them.
Bangkok: Mainly bright pink ones or bright yellow ones-I really don't like getting taxis in Bangkok because as soon as they realise your not a western tourist(when I'm with my Thai step-mum or friends) they don't want to take you because they can't cheat money out of you (over charge you) like they do to all the tourists. |

In NYC our cabs are yellow and we can flag them down without calling a number and they accept credit/debit cards. |
