What do you think...? |
Its just a general question on certain issues such as the most 'hottest' seeing tagline of all Malaysians "we're multiracial" and "we're a safe country"?
First of all, I asked this question out of sincerity and honesty. Many people claim Malaysia is 'multiracial' then why do they stereotype each other's races? As if its not enough, they go about calling people/categorizing them into a particular ethnic group/race 'pandai-pandai' just because of their looks.
Some examples I can give you:
I have a Mongolian friend who was being told off by some Malaysians (in their filthy Malaysian accent which is impossible to decipher but luckily a fellow Malaysian friend was there) "You Chinese people cannot even speak Chinese"... and despite telling them that he's Mongolian, many other Malaysians STILL insist/think that Mongolians and Chinese are the same.
The same goes towards some Eurasians and Caucasians (who ARE Malaysian citizens by rights), being ridiculed and called 'dirty' and 'show offs'. Additional Details In the case of being multiracial again, why can't Malaysians live as 'Malaysians' and racially profiled as 'three major races'? I guess minorities deserve their roles too, would you agree?
Why is it so difficult for Malaysians to not jump to their own conclusions about other people's races and judge them/stereotype them based on appearances/origins? Many people call me a 'Chinese' just because I look Chinese, without ever asking what the heck am I in the first place.
I am sure many of you have experienced this and may want to give your views too.
Kindly star my question and pass it around. I need some good answers here... |

I can sense your frustration!
However, I agree with Anderson, Myra, Shah, the Bo$$ and young wifey. I think most of your questions explains great deal more about your bitterness and prejudice than Malaysians as a whole.
Dont ask what Malaysia could do for you instead what could you to ensure harmony in Malaysia. Complaining is not going to solve anything especially here. As a minority living in Malaysia myself, I have learned that we cant demand respect instead but we have to earn it!!
PS: Dont be like 'pot calls kettle black'! |

Seems there is much arguments here. Maybe your intentions are to make us think. I'm not a regular answerer in this area butsince you bought it up yeah we have certain stereotypes in our country. Aren't it the same in other countries. For instance in US african american are still stereotyped and many other countries. We are striving to live in harmony. People do not want to bring up this issue as it can possibly make things worse. Yes we are multiracial and we are a safe country. Stereotypes happen all the time but it is up to us to keeps our civil to all races always. It is up to us to change and make things better. |

hmmm.was is wrong with you lah..thebear..why you must always love to provoke people with these sensitive issues...didnt you know that ..wherever and whenever you go..never ever bring up issue like religions and politics or races and such in your daily conversation as this will lead to frustrations and anger..
why must you stir up our harmony here..yeah, i know..being honesty is the best policy but the truth is, we are only humans..and being human, we are not and never will be perfect...so please lets us thank god and bersyukur a little bit that we still get to live and lead a happy life here in Malaysia..
stop all this pathetic whining..this and that...bla..bla..bla..its getting boring and lame..
Edit: yeap, when being provocative with friends, will instill hatred among each other..nothing to be doubt of..be it and let it be..or else, no one like to be around you coz you are too annoying..i think you seriously need help, my friend..it seems that you loves to judge a book by its cover..you are thinking too much and ends up confused and irritating..

You haven't traveled overseas, have you?
Why is it so important to force yourself on racism, petty issues and blame anyone else here almost everyday?
Many countries are far more "racist" and intolerant than Malaysians ever thought of being. Apparently, you're well indoctrinated by the extreme propaganda, ideology and Malaysia Kini.com After all, who are you to call someone else "intolerant"?
Why do you think racism is wrong- because someone told you? Are only Malays, the government, politicians and police forces folk racist and intolerant?
Get a hobby and don't be a cyber graffiti. Clean up your own house before branding other people derogatory names!!! |

Building a multiracial nation is not an easy job..It takes a long time to ensure all races to comprehend and respect each other and this has been given the top priority by the Malaysian government...Malaysia right now is way more different than Malaysia 20-30 years ago..Today, most Malaysians have assimilated well and respect each other...Unfortunately, there is still a few individuals who don't understand the multiracial concept and refuse to acknowledge other races...To me, it's normal...We cannot expect everyone to accept our ideology or thoughts just when we thought it's the right thing to do..Some people will oppose and stick to their conservative ways...The incident that you had encountered is an example of a few narrow-minded people who refuse to change their mind..Sometimes they are being ignorant to the concept of multiracial and its benefits to the society in short and long terms...They refuse to unite and socialize with other races. This does not happen in Malaysia only..In fact, it happens anywhere, in any country that claimed to be multiracial..In the US for e.g..Racism is a lot more obvious than in Malaysia..American-African is called 'black' while the Caucasians are called 'white'..I know the terms refer to the skin colour but isn't it obvious? Black is always referred to something bad while white is regarded as the colour of purity and goodness..'Black' people are always neglected.Just look at the Katrina hurricane incident which devastated New Orleans...Most people who live there are 'black'...When the hurricane struck, aids from the Federal Government arrived late and it cost about 10k lives to death..Most people saw that as an act racism towards the African-Americans...UK-born Arabs are always called Arabs in the UK and the 9/11 has made the situation becomes more worse..You see..It's not easy to create a multiracial country...Believe me, the situation in Malaysia is way better than in the US and UK although some of the government's policies are bias...At the same time the MP's always ensure that the bills they have passed will benefit all races in Malaysia including the minorities in Sabah and Sarawak...I believe in my government especially the respectul PM Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in doing their jobs...Our role is to support the development and to respect each other in order to become united Malaysians... |

Malaysians generally think since they live in a racial harmony, they know ALL the races in the world. The truth is, we only have three majorities the Malays, Chinese, and Indians.
Long time ago, at a roadblock...I was stopped by the Police. He asked me if I'm Bangladeshi...I said no, I'm not. He immediately pulled me over, and asked me for my passport.
After he found out where I'm from....he laughed at me... "Muka macam Bangla...ingatkan Bangla tadi..."
I knew he wanted to get some money out of me, because he was finding faults with my car, etc.
What does this tell you?
Most Malaysians never liked other races.
It has been inbred since young...Malays like this, Chinese like that...Indians like this...
I also find it strange that why everyone thinks that Indonesians are born to be housekeepers and construction workers, and Thais are born sex workers.
College/university campuses...its even horrible there.
They are segregated in hostels due to prayer reasons...The Muslims dont want to live together in an apartment with non muslims. This is from my personal experience in an institution in Melaka.
So...are we all...really tolerant? And racially harmonious? |

In everything we do, there is no right or wrong. Everything depends on the angle you look at the issue.
If the person agree with you on your opinion, then things should be fine. But should there be some sort of objection, the it really have to depend which side you want to stand..
As for the Mongolian case, we cannot deny the fact that there are still people out there whom I catogorise them as FROG IN THE WELL. They have those kind of mind set as long as your skin color is yellow, then you must be a chinese. Sad to say that when they blar out this sentence, it seems like it should hit them back badly, simple logic... they cannot see the difference (maybe they are too blind) or maybe they are just those snob who thinks they are correct everytime..
Just be positive and open minded about things and people around us. Let those frogs say whatever they want cos there will be a day someone will teach them...
Cheers.. |

First, multiracial. Yes, we are a multiracial country. As is US, UK and alot of other places. Are we multiracial tolerant? To the outsiders (meaning when we talk to strangers), we will always try to "display" our geniality. To "show off" that we 'love' all other ethnics. But god knows, deep down, we are actually cursing the other fellow in our mind. Don't try to deny this, people. And yet...I guess...we can't really blame the majority of people who are racists. I believe all of us are racists at one point or another. How many times have we found ourselves in situations where if we have to ask for help between a person of a different ethnic and a person of our own ethnic, who would we walk up to first? This really comes down to our upbringing and the environment surrounding us. If we see people being discriminatory towards us, then can you blame us for being discriminatory back? I blame the government for creating such "discriminatory environment". Things like NEP (which is clearly to oppress the minority), quotas and other special privilege are not helping the situations.
Malaysia is a racially tolerant country? Then why do our government always need to remind us not to say this and that......? Ironically, their own MPs said the very thing that is 'sensitive' and has the potential to 'disrupt racial harmony'. But did this MPs ever apologise to the minorities? And why do our current ruling party always need to bring up the issue of 13/5 everytime an election is forthcoming? Why do we still have quotas now after almost 50 years of independence? Why can't we minorities have the same discount when purchasing property?
I agree that discrimination happens anywhere in the world but I know for a fact that in US, everything is so fair and just and ALL CITIZENS do have equal rights and opportunity under the US Constitution. Heck, even their Mr President can be impeached. Now, this is what I call true liberty and justice. None of those bullshit quotas and NEPs and hak istimewa kaum Bumi. No wonder their people are laughing at us now for the sexist remarks made by our 2 MPs regarding the 'bocor' case. And our government officials never admit faults, do they?
Finally, pertaining to the comment that we are a "safe country". Yes, we are. Geographically. And only because the minorities have been really tolerant (and value life) so far. Period. |
