メリーちゃん

What do you think about Japan?

I'm talking about just Japan in general.
Not specifics.
If you do like it, Why?
If you don't, Why not?
I'm curious. :)

Its historical and traditional background, culture educated, free ideology and philosophy, diligence and seriousness, moderation and contrivability which has been improved and/or modified from ancient Chinese culture/philosophy to be independently. Japanese are not moron yellow monkey but much more clever.

It is how Japan is now prosperous and rich in Asia without any religion. That's why I like it.

On the contrary, because of its mono-ethnic civilization with very individual language quite uneasy to communicate to out of the country, Japan is very shady, mysterious, strange, irrational and irreligious from some view points for Westerners.

Although I may accept those different points as Independence from others but I don't like that Japan is not willing to try to shorten the gaps with foreign countries except financial support or making profitable business for themselves. Japan seems to resist mutual globalization in the world in a sense. It is unfair, I think.

I lived there for 2 years and 3 months. It was okay. A bit on the overrated side I say. Japanese remind me a bit of the French, both countries are WAY too in love with their culture and their food. LOL. I didn't like the food or the weather there.

On the plus side, Japanese girls have a cute fashion sense. But Thai and Chinese girls are prettier.

Overall, C+

I think it is a very interesting country with a very interesting culture and there is more to it than anime, manga, geishas, samurai, etc.

I like japan, certain parts of it are very pretty (kyoto etc.) but it is very crowded, especially around Tokyo. and Tokyo also smells weird. As far as people, I think the Japanese are friendly, clean, smart people. But many of them (and I dont mean to be racist or offensive) have that pushy, thinks their the best country/race "asian" attitude.

I like Japan insofar as I can walk down the streets in my residential neighborhood at 2am, go to 7-11, withdraw $1000 from the ATM, and walk home feeling totally safe. For the most part people don't bug me on the street (for the MOST part) or catcall or any of the BS they did back home. Oh, and when I buy stuff off the internet I can schedule when they should deliver it. So that's neat. And the convenience stores are really convenient.

But.

Everything closes too early, people have no spatial awareness and often do things counter to common sense (i.e., wearing winter coats when it's 70 degrees outside because it's not spring yet and therefore would be inappropriate to not wear a winter coat). People are xenophobic and when they're not, they're just ignorant in that "slightly racist" way. (Next person to ask, "Can you use chopsticks?" gets punched.) They're too proud of weird Japanese things that they think are unique and which are not (4 seasons!). They're not very accommodating to foreigners and don't know how to grade their language. So if you understand a fair amount of Japanese but just need them to simplify what they say, they often just give up or speak in broken English that makes no sense. By and large they have no imaginations and cringe if you ask for their opinion unless they're about 80 years old. (Then suddenly they are BURSTING with opinions.)

And so on.

But I like having national health insurance. So.

One Love
I like it because it's an interesting country, I've always wanted to visit there, and I've heard the shopping in Tokyo is AMAZING :D

well i was there for about one year in tokyo, and the people for the most part are very respectfull, and at night time they to can have a good time, the culture like what you see in the movies is actually still there. so for the most part even though is turning more modern everyday, japan it self if filled with lots of fun things to do if you are willing to get lost in translation like i did, but its part of the adventure i guess.
