In my opinion, China is the most fascinating and contrasting country in the world to visit, so diverse culturally, geographically, socially, etc. Of course, the type of tourism you would do in China is not the same as spending two weeks on an all-inclusive resort in the Bahamas or Mexico. It is more like a journey of discovery. In a nutshell, this is my view of China. Hundreds of good books and guides have been written on this incredible country. Some excellent travel guides are available, and they will give you a good overview of the country. Try the Lonely Planet series. |

China is very interesting country to visit. There are at least two types of tours you can plan and take:
* A more traditional one -- visit the major sites like:
Beijing - the Forbidden City, Summer palace, Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall; TianAnMen square
Xian - the terracota warriors and emperor tombs
Shanghai - Old Shanghai, the Bund
Hong Kong - Victoria Peak, Kowloon, New Territories
Macao - major gambling location
* A less traditional and potentially longer trip:
Some of the places listed above
Suzhou -- to see the various gardens of ancient Chinese officials
see silk spinning and processing
Hangzhou -- see tea plantations, West Lake, beautiful scenery
from Hangzhou travel to HuangShan (mountain scenic place)
Chengdu -- visit Panda Research Base; Wen Shu Temple; from Chengdu travel to JiuZhaiGou for breathtaking scenery and intersting culture experiences.
I can continue the list with many more sites and places. China is a huge country...so many interesting places to visit.
Overall, having lived and traveled in China for over 6 years (multiple occasions starting from 1987) I highly recommend it as a travel destination.

I've never been to China, nor have I ever even thought about going. But my husband wants to visit. My father-in-law had a good time there years ago while he was over because he was in the service. |
