Well, "manang" is a word in Illocano. My family is illocano, "manang" can means, old lady, sister, cousin, and ale whichi is also mam, lady, or woman. Manang is used before the name of the person you want to ask like if the name of the lady is Rose you say, manang rose. Manang is also a word for respect for older people, instead of kuya or ate, but I do think that manang is for older people only.

It is how we call the old or elderly woman showing our respect for her and her age.

Phoenix
Depends how it is used. It can be a term for calling an "old lady" with respect or "big sister" but it can also mean "splinter" and "conservative" at times.

Manang is synonymous to spinster, or to someone who looks like one.

It could also mean older sister or older woman.

It's an address for middle-aged women. I would guess the equivalent of 'obaasan' for Japanese.
