It means they are giving you a "safe" response.

Most people do not necessarily say what they mean or mean what they say, or even say the whole truth but nothing but the truth.

If you want to know what it means, you first really need to get to know the person who said it. And yes, it could mean the things that you have stated but it also mean many other things.

Well it's usually when someone is in between the state of being FRIENDS and IN A RELATIONSHIP. But then again, they can also be going through some troubles with their existing relationship, thus the "complication."

To me, it's a cop out answer that implies the person is in a relationship that's not completely aboveboard for whatever reason. It's a way to say that they are involved with someone but could be enticed into a relationship with whoever they're talking to if the circumstances are right.

Depends on the tone of voice used. Could be any of the above, which you mentioned. Maybe person is going through a break-up or divorce or simply that he or she does not want to talk about it?

I always like to fill up questions that ask me about my civil status with "it's complicated". Not that I am having an affair or not sure of my civil status - whether I am in, or out, or about to... I just like the sound of it. Makes the reader raise his/her eyebrows and wonder, wouldn't it?

When I opened my son-in-law's friendster account and saw him checked "it's complicated" after his civil status, I immediately called my daughter's attention and laughingly asked her: "are you two still on or not?"

I have often wondered why they put such in their choices. Perhaps to make way for those who don't know where they stand? Hmmm...

"It's Complicated" means "an extraordinary or a not-so-easy to explain situation".

When people use the term "it's complicated" it means one of three things to me;
(a) they don't really know what they're talking about.
(b) they don't want you to know the truth.
(c) it's complicated.
(c) is the rarer of the three motives.

It means it is in stark contrast with a simple, happy relationship wherein the boy loves the girl, and girl loves boy, and everyone is fine.

To elucidate - it could mean that Gaius sees this girl that nobody else sees, makes love to her constantly but could not really touch her, and she tells him what to do as angels do.
