911 is the emergency telephone number in North America. (Canada and US both use it). It is link to the emergency team/crew that includes the police, fire department and EMS(paramedics).

now people also use 911 to identify the tradegy that happened in the US on September 11,2001 (Sepember is the 9th month in the calendar so 9-11) .

Well it is two things. 1. an emergency phone number for fire, police, ect
2. When hijackers crashed planes in the twin towers in new york and caused a worldwide crisis. It happened sept, 11, 2001 which can be also said as 9/11.

It doesn't work in the Philippines. If you have a heart attack in Metro Manila, it will be hours maybe days before your get help. In the states you call 911 for Emergency Medical Services (EMS). If you encounter any emergency problem, that is beyond your control, you call 911. After your call is made they determine what Emergency Services is needed, such as the Fire Department, Police Department, Highway Patrol etc..
In most cases the response time is less than fifteen minutes. The money to fund the 911 systems comes from the everyday taxes Americans get out of their pay-check.
