What is it with Filipina girls and the peace sign?

Previously posted 5 months ago.

I was flipping over friend's pages at friendster and I could not help but notice something... a lot of the Filipinas in those pictures (well, most of them actually) were holding up peace signs with their middle and index fingers on a variation of some sort.

You know how Mariah Carey always moves her head slightly to the right every single time someone is to take her picture? Well a lot of Filipina girls flip out the peace sign whenever they are to be shot with a camera. Check out these examples....

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hxero/2298759713/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/funfotoloco/2956249464/

Both hands, on just one hand, both hands doing the "Nixon-resignation" peace sign sometimes, but most of them just right beside each side of their smiles. And it's always with a seemingly forced smile, the kind of smile that you know went away right after the camera flash. It's almost as if it's a reflex action whenever somebody says "picture-picture".

Nothing wrong with it though, just wondering if you have any thoughts / theories on this interesting philippine photographic phenomenon.

hahaha. i too have wondered what was up with that. I have caught 3 friends of mine do that pose when in front of a camera. it's funny and it fits their personality. i however, have never tried it, it will just look silly on me.

Lenna
The same with other asian women do. We do a V-sign on our fingers.

mestiza.
this is my kind of question! :D

so, the peace sign is sort of a "asian gang sign" if you will.
I flash it all the time! and i'm in the US.
sort of a way to say, "hey i'm asian. i'm i'm awesome!"
well, i'm half... but it's still funny.
I have many pictures of me doing that, and of my cousins doing it too.

a lot of asians do it, not just filipinas.
it's so cute though, right? :]

simply ME
lol funny question
im filo born in australia.
i tend to do that as well in pix, it's kind of a habit when it comes to taking pictures i guess

I don't think it's the peace sign. I think it stands for 'V' as in Victory. It's supposed to be cute, though, it isn't always so (and now, I welcome all the thumbs down). It's influenced by Japan and Korea, methinks. Anime and "Asianovelas" are popular in this country.

By the way, I know many FIlipinas who don't do it.

PT, are you sure this isn't your way of advertising your "girl" friends? lol. Honestly, I think it is the current fad (foreign inspired) that they do to look fashionable.

battgirl
My friends call it "Japan-Japan" when they do it out of jest. Filipinas who does this probably though it looks cool or they thought flashing the peace sign would make them look like those cute Japanese girls. =))

Well, my camera reflex is to dash to the camera's focus and flash a smile! Hehe...

Bhuwisit
The number of fingers raised indicates how many men they are juggling at the same time................on the Internet.

If not and she only has one guy, it's how many times older he is to her.

Hot Head
it can be interpreted in the west as lesbianism

The asian picture phenomenon is my guess.

Asian Picture Phenomenon (or APP in short) is a mannerism that most Asians posses, especially the ones from the EAST (China, Japan, Philippines). Typically women. The Japanese have started this and you can see this when you watch Paris Hilton going to Japan with her "fans". They all have their peace signs up and ready. The Japanese then passed it on to the ever-mimicking Filipinos. We've always had a thing for Japanese culture (Tamagotchi, Anime and Pokemon-Nintendo Products). Then it spread around the Far East.

I hate it when people do that...It's so annoying.

paolylo
i don't know how many East Asian-born friends as opposed to Filipina friends you have there, but the peace/victory sign on pictures started with those Chinese, Japanese, Koreans.

Pinays don't usually do that when posing for a pic. if anything, it's probably an "Asian thing" and our girls just copied it from watching those "Asianobelas" on TV.

The Koreans & Japanese have been doing it for a long time. To some Koreans the two fingers forming a V peace sign symbolizes the two divided Korea --- South & North as one and it is the equivalent of westerners' "say cheese" when taking pic.

I don't know about Filipinos though.

probably a fad - looks cute on girls anyway..though i could never imagine myself being caught dead smiling with that peace sign hehe

Another Japanese invasion!

Even before it became a thing elsewhere...Japanese have been doing the peace sign when taking photos.

I have a photo taken when I was 3 years old in a grammar school here and we are doing the peace sign already. Didnt understand what it meant at all. I was thinking back then that its part of the whole picture-taking...along with the smile.

Cheers mate!=D

mayilow
i thought the chinks were most famous for these habits? i dont know bout this but i do the alright sign alot.
