Some people shop several times a week because they only have enough liquid cash to get by. So to them that's the only way to go. If they do not use extra gas to purchase their food then all they waste is their time.
Then some people can do their groceries by bulk & when they buy they buy a lot like those from the warehouse stores. Then they save because it will come out as cheaper per item.
But the thing that we need to see here is all these depends upon the people who consumes the groceries, some people consume a lot when they see that they have a lot in stock. Some consume a smaller portions to make what little they have to stretch. So in the end it doesn't matter how you buy them, for its usually depends on how you consume them. |

I work in retail and trust me, even if it is accessible, I shop twice a month in bulk, except for fresh items which I buy weekly. Most often bulk purchases are cheaper than single items - though this is not often the case, you have to do your maths. I spend a lot of time comparing prices and brands and browsing alternatives. This way I get more for my money and when I need to buy something urgent, I go straight to where it is and avoid shopping for unnecessary items. Quick note, do you know that you should not go for groceries when you are hungry? You tend to crave for food and will end up buying more food items - often one that is out of the budget. |

I think the best thing to do is to plan your meals and do it a week at a time.
I make a "menu" of sorts mapping out what I'm having for dinner every night of the week and make a grocery list based off that. I decide what to have sometimes off what is on sale at the grocery store.
I find that I don't over spend and food does spoil from sitting around and not using it. I'm in the U.S. |

LOL
its the same thing...simple math
you spend $50 a day for 7 days = 350 for the week
or you spend $350 only one day of the week.
same thing! |

Once a week is probably best because you save on transportation expenses. I personally do not follow this rule at the moment, but I am working on it. |

I live in the US and we really only do big meals on the weekends. Through out the week, I just like to stop and pick up stuff to eat through out the day. But the shopping is done mostly on the weekends. I hate for things to go bad so I rather make trips to the store everyday, then to buy too much and have it waist. |

Going to the store once a week, will save you money in the long run. Generally if you go to market everyday, your more likely to spend 20-30% more in groceries, due to spontanious buying, versus, making a list, and going the one time.
Plus you'll also save cost in fuel, if you can figure that in.

I'm from the US and we shop simply whenever we need food. There's only two people in my household, however. When I have kids and therefore a larger household I plan to shop in bulk. It's much cheaper to do so, rather than shopping at a local grocery store. Most, if not all, bulk stores (we have Sams Club around here) require a membership which helps keep costs low.
But once a week is the better bet. That way you save on time and energy rather than running out every day for something else. Plus you'll save gas (which is saving money) and help out the enviornment.
But it really doesn't make a diffference if you spend $100 at a store one day during a week or go there 4 times during a week and spend $25 each time. |

I do the bulk of my shopping in one big trip twice a month, usually on payday. I do have to go back for the things that needs replaced constantly: milk, bread, fresh fruit, etc. Obviously I freeze my meat products. I am in Ohio. |

It is more economical to shop once a week in my household (East Texas). We plan out the menu for each week and then shop according to the menu. There is no real savings on the groceries but it saves quite a bit on fuel. |

I see all the math but it doesn't really work out that way. When I'm in the Philippines and I buy a weeks groceries, it looks like plenty so my wife invites people over to feed them. Relatives all want to have some of this and some of that. And our weeks worth of groceries last about 3-4 days. When we shop each day, and its very convenient to do that, we spend much less than trying to stock up. I hear your thoughts already but, who can say no to someone about food? I can't. |
