I spend a little over a month in china last summer and saw a lot and realized how much more there was to see. Did Beijing for the Chinese cultural thing. Opera, wall, forbidden city. Xian for the history clay statues but for the people go to Guangxi and the city of Yangshou and Guilin. A site I found was a great help. And tour guides are great for day tours. |

There's a lot to list, but I would avoid the most popular section of the great wall (Badaling) as it's essentially a tourist trap. You should try the Simatai section, you get to see the Great Wall with less crowds. One of the best moments is to watch the sunrise at the Great Wall.
Other great sites are the private garden residences of Suzhou, because it's an incredibly calming and ethereal experience, and the West Lake of Hangzhou, which is surrounded by Imperial Gardens and waterscapes. Hangzhou and Suzhou's vincinity has been equated to 'Heaven on Earth' by ancient Chinese poets. Visit during spring or fall, and avoid the Chinese holidays (Chinese New Year and week of Oct 1st) because the crowds are insane. |

Personally I liked the Temple of Heaven. You get to interact with the Chinese people, play some hackey sack, see some history and some great archeticture. |
