What is the main cause of poverty in the philippines? do you think it can be eradicated?

The main cause of poverty in the Philippines is lack of proper education.

OR

The lack of will to get proper education in the first place.

Highly educated Filipinos have the tendency to help their parents and siblings (financially stabilizing the family), marry a bit later (ensuring proper health for both mother and child), support family planning, and bring up children full of values in life. The children, having been raised in a loving family, tend to be productive citizens of the country.

Unfortunately, these families make up only a very small part of the population.

What's more is that these Filipinos, being disillussioned by the state of their beloved country, tend to work and immigrate abroad, giving the Philippines a very bad case of brain drain.

Uneducated Filipinos, on the other hand, tend to trash their family, marry very early in life, make so many children that they can't support, and leave their children on the streets to make money for them. The children, having been raised in this harsh environment, tend to repeat the same mistakes their parents did: marry early, make many children, and then leave them outside to beg and sell goods, risking their lives everyday on the busy streets of Manila. Poor children, at their age they should be in school!

Unfortunately, this makes the circle complete and the cycle of poverty goes on and on.

One problem is that Philipinos ask each other how to end their poverty , you are asking the wrong people ( if they had the answer they would be out of poverty) . Ask people of other more developed countries . People , quit blaming all your problems on the government , look within yourself . One person in government did not put you in poverty , one person will not ( can not ) get you out .
The main problem is a combination of too high a population , combined with an attitude of doom .
Will this change ? It will change ONLY when YOU change .....

not enough job opportunities for all and for some, underemployment. the economy needs major overhauling and in a similar way, the educational system too (particularly, the public sector). if and when there is a marked improvement in these two areas - plus the eradication of corruption - then poverty can be significantly reduced.

Illiteracy and Unemployment. Those are the two major causes of poverty in the Philippines. No, poverty cannot be eradicated. It is deeply rooted in the system, it will take perhaps a thousand years for it to be fully obliterated from the scene.

Main cause is that many Philipinos are not educated about world products , excluding them from much export business .However , the main cause may be that there are too many offspring per family .

Lack of family planning. Yes, it can be eradicated if the government steps up and makes sure every family that wants it has access to information and government subsidized birth control.

Bareasskmeagain
Family planning and the use of birth control. . . . .don't let the church tell you how to run your life, they want a large contributing population but when it comes to support, they will be the last to dole out help.

corruption, garbage, over population, bad leadership, people are not united. I believe Philippines will progress if each Filipino ""Be the change they want to see" - Gandhi"

I once read a report that showed there were more millionaires in the Philippines than a small country in Europe (probably Holland or Denmark). The report also compared average incomes, where they had the Philippines beat by a landslide. This shows that the money and resources are there, but the ones controlling the money are a smaller percentage in the Philippines. In America and Western countries, the ones in power (believe it or not) have a sense of fairness and will do things to protect and empower the less privileged. They offer incentives to companies and schools to help the less privileged, and they create programs to assist the poor. There are also many laws that won't allow companies to take advantage of their employees, like with minimum wage and benefits.

Unfortunately, in the Philippines when someone gets money or power (hello, Marcos and his cronies) their primary goal is how to gain more money and power and how to flaunt their status. It's a terrible sickness that is manifested in many 3rd world countries, not just the Philippines (hello warlords and politicians of Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia). When the ones on top are greedy and shallow, caring mostly about their image and net worth, the ones in the bottom are doomed to suffer.

There are many Filipinos who sacrifice so that their children can go to school, then they do all they can to send them abroad, in the hopes of finding a good career so money can be remitted back home.
Education in the Philippines is not the problem. Most McDonald's employees and mall workers have college degrees. Nobody is hiring. If college graduates can't find jobs, how much more with the extremely poor?

The only way poverty can be eradicated is when more of those in power actually give a damn and are willing to have fewer cars and mistresses, so that wealth can be distributed more evenly. Chances are, however, the committee created to eradicate poverty will be the ones swindling more money. HA HA HA. Ultimately, greed is the cause of poverty in the Philippines.

If only a few politicians go against the majority, there would be a chance that poverty could be reduced. But as one congressman privately told my cousin, "It's not easy turning down 'gifts' of money, when everyone else is accepting it, and I hardly have enough to implement the programs I am for."

Too many people.

Not enough protection from corporations. (one instance is a sugar cane company that wouldn't even allow people to plant food near their huts) all kinds of horrors - won't pay living wages.

US backing of the Marcos dictatorship. Put the country in ruins.

Rampant corruption based on the US army black market.

Not under Catholicism. Not when people rely on big families to survive in old age.

You are all missing the point. The real reason is tradition. The philippine tradition is to have the children support the parents. Thus, the kids never get education. Their social security system allows for a "full payout" instead of payments like ours. Most take the cashout!!! What a mistake to allow that!

Corruption in the government, over population, peace in order problem, high cost of common goods manipulated by rich people.

Higher cost of education and lack of job opportunities. So many more because of all politicians using their power to corrupt.

main cause? hmmmm, ambivalence, not my problem attitude and apathy.

The Philippines is rich in natural resources and blessed with peaceful loving people. a persons poverty might be someone else's riches.

I would still say it depends on what you mean by poverty? if poverty in material things then there is a lot of that in evidence, the estimate is that there is about 40% of the population living below the poverty line. folks who cannot even eat once a day, and have to rely on literally garbage for food. though it is sickening to see such poverty around us in the Philippines, it is apathy that promotes it more.

if everyone returns to the non materialistic way of life, and remove apathy from their heart then we can change and eradicate material poverty from the Philippines.

However what is more alarming is the spiritual poverty around us. I commend groups like gawad kalinga who has literally setup shop in the poorest of the poor to uplift the community, not just the individual. the gawad kalinga model has changed lives, not just in the poorest of the poor, but among the richest of the rich around the world.

may there be more folks who would do their share in helping out, giving a hand and removing apathy from their hearts and mind.

start a scholarship fund, live below your means and share your blessings to the rest of the population, those living below the poverty line.
