What is your suggestion when it comes to the Economy of the Philippines?

According to Wikipedia, the Philippines is " is a newly developed country with an agricultural base, light industry, and service-sector economy". It is also labeled as an NIC (Newly-Industrialized Country), which includes countries which such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Mexico (there are a total of 9 nations in the world under this classification). It is also ranked in 2004 as the "24th largest economy by the World Bank according to purchasing power parity".

However, many have argued that the economy is far from reaching the "successful" status in order to meet the needs of the people. Plus, according to many articles that I have read in the past, the Filipino economy was once second to Japan in economic stature back more than 40 years ago.

While many decades in the past, we have witnessed neighbouring nations in the pacific grew from one of the world's poorest nations to one of the richest (such as South Korea).
Additional Details
What I am asking is do you think there is a way that can help build the Filipino economy to become stronger? What would you suggest in order to bring the economy into a "developed" status? Do you believe that this is possible in the Philippines, especially within our lifetime? What is your say at this?

If only our elected officials (Senators and Congressmen) will stop quarelling and WORK on reforms, programs, policies that will propel our nation.

Let us unite in doing what is best for our nation, the problem is, almost all elected officials have their own agenda, we just had an election and now they are already preparing themselves for the next election.

Stop fighting, support our leaders let us do our share in nation building, let us all be a law abiding citizen.

We Filipinos if we are in another country we are the most well mannered tourists/workers, why not be the same when we are in our own country.

Let us not wait what our country can give us, but rather do what we can give to our country.

The Filipinos lives in a country that is dependent by itself. The Philippines is a rich country in its natural resources that many westerners envy. One small (?) thing though, we even import rice!
What makes it difficult is to pay our depts and build the country at the same time......We have to produce and sell instead of buying what we could not afford. We have to produce product that is not only good for our country but to international standard too.....so.......many things to say.......and to DO.

THeres a big diffrence between Japan and the philippines. Apperantly, We have the skills, man power, knowlege, resources, and Talent. the problem is? We are missing the most important thing that the pilipinos need. LOVE OF COUNTRY. And thats the big difference. The problem is the present leaders of the country are All Corupt A55holes who only want is a quick peso. Thats the main problem now. CORRUPTION... if that goes away, then the rest of the problems like poverty and low economy will gradually decrease and hopefully be gone.

It has been claimed that the Phil. used to be a dominant economy even surpassing Japan in the 50's ,which always gave me amusement whenever I read an article mentioning this.
And you have just mentioned it again. This is an absolute untrue statement.
When I visited the Hawaii War Memorial about 20 years ago 1984, they had a WW2 airplane speed gauge instrument as an exhibit and it was stamped Made in Japan 1936.Japan was already a industrial economy decades prior to WW2,and the Phil. under the Americans were importing industrial manufactured goods and continue to do so in the present decade,10 decades hence. We are still an agricultural economy where majority of our population still lives in agricultural villages. We are successful in exporting labor, menial(domestics) and some professionals(nursing)and they have contributed much to improving the purchasing power parity as you put it.
But I am surprised that we are the 24th largest economy compared to more than 200 countries? Then that's quite an achievement for us I would say.
The question is How can we be more progressive and perhaps overtake our neighbors in Asia? We need to go back to basics, meaning Good and HOnest Governance, a more aggressive and out of the box strategic growth objectives(sending more domestics and professionals abroad is not one of them)which relates to more jobs, and perhaps luck (an oil deposit would be nice).

Philippines had been the 2nd richest country in Asia in terms of economy during the Marcos era...

Philippines' economy depends a lot now on tourism, exporting goods, and our own OFWs...

Philippines' economy will recover and will rise if only the government officials won't be corrupt, and if our people would be more disciplined, and educated...

One solution is to attract more foreign investors by giving more incentives, less taxes, more control of the companies they will be setting up. If more investments come into the country, this means more businesses. And more businesses mean more jobs for the people. More jobs available will also mean less poverty. Less poverty will result in a stable economy for the country. It's all chain reaction.

Philippines had its golden moment in the past, when it overshadowed Japan and the rest of the Asian countries as a very developed country, boasting of a rich and stable economy, more well-educated people and a large middle-income families. But with the onset of crook politicians, Philippines went down the drain.

my suggestion is to perk it up. level the playing field. establish infrastructures. open up some more opportunities to investors. invest in the peace and order.

Pursue education. I think Education would provide a more stable future for the Philippines. More college graduates would imply greater labor force. I also suggest that its primary resources be shifted to its aquatic resources since Phil. is an archipelago. Thus, it is rich in aquatic resources. Maybe this could be the country's solution to scarcity of food.

Mr. John C is correct! If only the rich ones will put into action the Philippine economy in full swing, this nation will be great again. Stop crab mentality so that each one of us will be able to move on.
GOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES!!!!!!

Elected officials, police and other authorities must abstain from any form of corruption, bribes or money laundering. And every Filipino citizen must have a respect for the laws of the Constitution and the local statutes. It is the only way which the nation will mirror to the outside world that it is a law-abiding, stable society and thereby attract investor confidence. Charter Change must naturally follow, too.
In the case of several young Pinoys whom I have helped financially, they cannot get jobs in the fields which they completed for graduation. They are either jostling for the few openings in call centers in major towns like Manila or Cebu (in other words, far away from home and family) or settling for work at the local Jollibee! More job creation, stimulation and chances for promotion in jobs must follow so that common people can feel the verve of this "newly developing country."
And everyone in the family must work at some sort of paying job. That is why South Koreans, Cambodians, Thais, Vietnamese and many other nationalities have such a roaring succes: everyone in the family pitches in, makes sacrifices until it hurts and they end up with a huge bankroll. I haven't witnessed this same sense of motivation in many Filipinos and it saddens me deeply. I love the Philippines and the Filipino people and want the best for them. But it is going to take everyone working together and almost bucking against the excesses of the system.

i think we must let president arroyo read your article..
and when she had read the article she must leave the palace of the filipino people..she does not belong there, she was not even voted to be there she used her power to control the results of the 2004 elections.and an evidence was took by wire tapping her phone calls telling mr. garcillano the comelec chairman of that time, that she must have a sufficient no. of votes that must be higher that the votes of the other presidential candidates.
after the evidence was aired on national television mrs arroyo got stunned that a few days later she had a State Of the Nation Address saying sorry to the Filipino people..in that time of saying sorry i pleaded her guilty of the accusations that she was facing..OOUUSST GLORIA ARROYO
FREE THE FILIPINO PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is my best topic!!!! thanks for asking..>!!!!

the Philippines' economy as we all know is struggling, now if we'd have people to block every forward move of the government, we can't do anything but take a step backward...

Philippines is a very rich country and I'm not saying this because I'm a filipino, but it's the truth, the only problem is, a big portion of our money goes to pay our debt in the world bank...

Philippines economy right now is still battling in order to be globally competitive and it's all thanks to the had working filipino's and the good governance of our president....

but if you'd really look close, Philippines is a great country with great grounds, great expectations, and great ambitions....

and i know, that in time, we would be back like we were never out before.... Onwards Philippines!

Rabbityama
The main thing is the Philippines needs to end the policy of sending its citizens overseas to make money to send back, and start encouraging its citizens to stay and build the economy. You can't build an economy in a nation when you are encouraging your citizens to leave! Some leave with real jobs, but many become mail order brides and sex slaves, and the current president encourages such things.

The government is not laying any foundations for a successful economy in the Philippines, so the Philiippines is currently unable to prosper economically.

The government needs to end the corruption and begin investing in areas that the Philippines is naturally good for, such as its large agricultural industry.
