The official language in the philippines are Filipino (Tagalog) and English. There are several dialects too.

examples of native dialects are:

Tagalog
Cebu
Ilokano
Hiligaynon
Waray-Waray
Northern Bikol
Kapampangan
Pangasinan
Southern Bikol
Kinaray-a
Maranao
Maguindanao
Tausug
Chavacano
Surigaonon
Masbatenyo
Aklanon
Ibanag

you should not worry about it too much, most people can understand english in the philippines

theamazingkate!
My best friend's dad lived there for two years and spoke tagalog ( i think that's how you spell it).

Phils
I've been there for many times. If you go to Luzon island, they speak both Tagalog and English! And don't be worried about the language because everything in Philippines are in Tagalog and English, such as TV or radio programs! But if you go to the province, they may able to speak English but not as well as the people in Manila.

since there are over 7000 islands.. there are many dialects that are spoken.. but the national language or the universal language is TAGALOG.. but not everyone one in Philippines know the national language because all they know is what they learn in their island...
or province.
The language can get confusing... the basics can be learned

Arashikitty
There are hundreds of dialects in the Philippines but the two official languages: Tagalog and English are widely spoken... Tagalog is a mix of Chinese, Spanish, and other languages, most especially spanish. Tagalog is a fun language!

If you don't understand Tagalog, it is fine... almost everyone there can speak english and it might surprise you to learn that even those who are not educated can speak "survival english."

hmmm....y so interested?
almost all filipinos speak English but our national language is Tagalog.but it really depends on where are you going.because every province has it's own dialect ie,ilocano,visaya,etc...
but i assure you everywhere you go, you can speak w/ them in english and a bit of spanish(w/ older people though or more in southern part of Philippines).

never.fade
i disagree with the person who said that people in Manila speak better english than anywhere else in the philippines. Its just that those from Manila are more liberated and feel more superior!

Pilipino and English, plus numerous widely spoken indigenous languages, some Spanish. (In 1961, the national language was referred to as Pilipino rather than Tagalog.)

they are many spoken dialects in the philippines but english and tagalog are most common used.

sonny_too_much
Tagalog is the official language and it is made up of many different languages. Chinese, Spanish, English, Japanese, Malay mixed with many Pilipine dialects. If you listen to Tagalog you will hear words from many languages.
The English spoken in most parts of the nation is Caribo English and is difficult to understand.
There is one language however that is universal, it is the American Dollar !

bunny baby
there are different languages in the Philippines but the most commonly used are FILIPINO(Tagalog which has a alot mixed of Spanish and Portuguese) and ENGLISH. it you are in the the city you will usually hear this 2 languages but if you are outside manila there are lots of dialects (not languages) in different places.in every province they have different dialects.

i suggest stick to Tagalog and English in this 2 languages you will be able to communicate well to the Filipino.

:-)
Tagalog is the main dialect in the Philippines, but we have a lot of other provincial dialects across the country.

Filipino, highly influenced by Spanish. If you know Spanish you wont have any trouble learning Filipino.
FYI- Tagalog is just a dialect, Filipino is the language.
