Nobody likes this answer but it is true.
Time. Spend time with him, doing whatever it is he prefers to do. It helps everybody if the time is scheduled, people with brain disorders need more structure than most, his family needs the time off.
If what he prefers to do is close to nothing (television, sitting still) get him up and moving. |

People with down syndrome tend to have "favorite" things. For example, my cousin has it and he loves music. So we got him music instruments.
A toy piano, guitar, drums...those are good toys for them. Does he like to draw? What about some crayons or a drawing board. Maybe his favorite DVD, does he like to watch television? Any Disney favorites? Think about his hobbies and that should give you an idea. |

What if you take him shopping? :) To his favorite store... and see what he likes the most and buy it :) |

Your question should read "whats a good gift for a person who has down syndrome?", not "whats a good gift for a down syndrome?", he is not a breed, he is a person, see the person first, then the disorder.
In response to your question, I have spent much time working with Down Syndrome and Autism and considering, he does not have developed coordination skills, perhaps try getting him blocks, this will improve his skills and will entertain him. |

My boss has a down syndrome daughter, wonderful girl she is now 20 but of known them for 8 years. Its really hard to shop for her, what I found was she loves music (boy bands) so in the past i have got her some cd's, some boy band T-shirts, she also loves ice cream, I once gave her a gift card to Cold Stone (and her parents let her manage the amount) I guess what you have to find out is what he likes maybe it wont be the gift you would normally get for a 16 but at least he will love it.
Good luck! |

It could be nice to let him pick out his own gift...take him with you....that could be fun for him and he's spending time with you which he might find really cool. |

How about a gift certificate from a big department store? Choosing what he wants firsthand would be an added thrill for him |

how about picking a day and spending it with him doing things he enjoys. when my son turned 4 yrs old my nephews took him to a concert in the park (he loves music) and then out to his favorite place to eat as his gift it was a boys day out and he loved it. you could do something similar. once you know his interests the choices are endless....gifts come and go and are usually thrown in a corner at some point but memories of time spent together are something that will be remembered and cherished by both of you.... |

I'm sure he has some favorite music or hobby or likes nature or a sport?
He probably still wears the shirts you gave him, as he considers them special as they were a gift from you.
I'd go spend some time with him and shop together for a new special gift. Maybe a shirt for teens his age with sports emblem or maybe an non profit support message? |

I would ask his parents. They would be the best source of what he loves and needs. There are books that talk to them, games that help with coordination. Ask Mom and Dad, I'll bet hey have a few things in mind. Music he can listen to is also good |

What about a bicycle?
I bet he'll love it.
Depends on his balancing skills u may have to buy 4 wheels one, then when he grow older u can try to take away the other two wheels.
It makes him go out and play and exercise. Good choice ain't it? |
