An old, small, mysterious wooden box at a yard sale. It's about 6" x 3" and has rounded corners, a dark-stain that still looks good, and every edge has these two thin uniquely built-in hinges. The wood is very smooth all around.
It grabbed my attention when I picked it up, noticed it was hollow and had some things rattling around inside it. At first, I couldn't figure out the secret way to open it. I saw a place to put your thumb, so after trying four different approaches, it finally snapped open to expose these old sewing machine parts (I had to ask the guy.)
The hinges allow the box to completely roll open and flatten, apparently for a worker to quickly re-tool the machine for different jobs. The inside is lined with an old felt material, fading from dark purple to light blue. When you close it back up, the two ends have four triangle-shaped edges that mesh perfectly like a puzzle-box. It is very well-made, and I think it will make a really cool curio box.
There is a small circular date stamped into the outside wood on one side: "PATENTED 1889 FEBRUARY 19."
I paid the guy $2.00. He said it was worth it. He'd just moved here from Calif.
Anybody wanna see a pic of it? ..... just e-mail me.
