Hi, I have been to Thailand 3 times in my life and I have done the elephant trekking and the snorkeling.

The elephant trekking was really great you would get picked up from your hotel and taken to a small village about 20 minutes out of Phuket, And you would be able to ride the elephant by yourself or with the instructor. After that you will get taken up to the restaurant for lunch. Then you will be able to ride on the yak ride (wasnt very interesting) and then you will be taken to see how rubber is made (was different from what you would think).

The Snorkeling was the BEST! You get taken to the this beach (where the movie The Beach was filmed) and then you will stop and have lunch and then get taken to 2 different locations to snorkel (i personally loved it , i could see lots of fish and coral. It was like a miniature Great Barrier Reef.) Then along the way you would get taken to the monkey island. Then near the end you will get taken to another island and will get to do more snorkeling there and can also go on the shark hunt.

I hope that was useful.

Any one of them are #1 ,I would spend as little time as possible in Bangkok, to many people and pollution
for me there is a lot to see in Thailand, your can go elephant trekking to visit the hill tribes between Chang Mai And Chang Rai and still go to the islands snorkle (ing) lots to do , play it by ear ,you will have a lot of fun.The Thai's are some of the friendliess people in the world and a smile goes a long way.
Good Luck!!

Thailand is a lot of fun. Out of the options you give us, I'd certainly say go snorkeling. The beach is always a good time. Also, give the elephants a miss... They aren't treated well at all. If you have a genuine interest in elephants (they're fascinating animals), then look into the animal rehabilitation centre in Ayuttaya. Certainly one of the highlights of my many trips to Thailand. I learnt more and got a lot closer contact with the beasties than I would have done on some stupid elephant trekking tour.

KICK IT W/ THE ELEPHANTS !

madonna_toller
None of them... Rather sip a cocktail at a wonderful beach and relax!

Crybaby Bob
1. Monkey got to be number one
2. Visit palace
3. Don't confuse rafting with white water rafting. It was more like floating on a bamboo raft.
4. Elephant trekking did this bored after about ten minutes.

There are more things than these that I can do in Thailand. I can visit the ancient ruins and marvel at their architecture that were done centuries ago. Many nature parks, unspoilts villages etc. What you have are the usual tourist activities. I will rather go explore what many people do not know.

African Farmer
I'd do my own stuff on a small island.

1- visit places and temples
2-snorkel @ different places
3-elephant trekking
4-white water

Monkeys and speedboats get my vote too.. you can get a boat for yourself, it is not that expensive and go thru all the major attractions near the river.
I had fun with monkeys far from BKK, near Chonburi, which is an interesting place, still quite "thai" unlike Pattaya that is so crowded with tourists that makes me sick after 10 seconds flat.

1-Elephant trek.
I've done all these and I would have to say that the most memorable was the Elephant trekking done during a 3 day trek on the Thai/Burnese border. Started off from Changmai in the north and it was a 3 day trek through the mountains. It was not an easy trek because it involved a lot of hiking all day to get to your next camp. We spent the first night at an Elephant camp run by the Karen hill tribe and the next day, we spent a good portion of day two ontop Elephants. Although the ride is slow and often uncomfortable, It's not everyday that you can ride on an elephant through the wilderness. These animals are really intelligent and have a special bond with their handlers (mahoots). After another night sleeping in another villiage, we went water rafting down a slow moving river. The raft was made of strung up bamboo poles and you stand on them while pushing along the bottom with a long pole. Very relaxing and you get to see some beautiful scenery along the way. Before we went back to ChangMai, we stopped at a famous temple on a mountain then swam at a beautiful waterfall. I've done this twice and each time they were physically hard as well as very memorable and rewarding experience. If your not up to the challenge of a full 3 day trek, just go for the short-tourist version that will take you strait to the elephant, still worth doing.
2-Snorkel
I've done this many times in Phuket. There are a lot of beautiful snorkeling spots around these islands especially in Ko phi-phi (island where the Dicaprio Movie "The Beach" was filmed). Paradise consists for beautiful beaches and clear warm ocean water. Snorkeling with bright colorful reef fish is truely a worthwhile thing to do when your in paradise.
3-Palace/Temple tours
Very fascinating culturally and historically and a good way to learn the religion and monarchy of Siam (Thailand). Worth doing at some point but as the saying among travelers go in thailand, "If you've seen one temple, you've pretty much seen them all". Most of the architecture of the temples are pretty much the same, although they are very beautiful. Remember to always remain respectful and remove your shoes whenever entering temples in Thailand.

Thailand is truely a magical place filled with culture and rich history and the people are among the friendliest and most hospitable in the world. It's called the Land of Smiles for a reason. Now enjoy your trip and you will always have a smile on your face too.
