Whats an ideal gift for someone off backpacking??

My friend is off to Thailand and surrounding areas for 3 months backpacking. I want a useful gift idea for her to take.

airline ticket round trip.

A travel journal!!!!
This is a book in which the person can record all those precious travel memories etc and maybe even write a diary of events whilst away on their travels.
You can get some nice ones on eBay and in shops such as W H Smiths and Army and Navy department store.
OR You could make one for her and decorate it with some nice Jolee's (fancy stickers) and personalise it.
I have a few journals already completed of our travels in Australia, Lapland and the Med.

Maybe out of budget but you could get a hotel room at the airport for the night before the big departure. I would love this and it would make things more exciting and relaxed.

When backpacking you do not want to be cluttered and prefer to choose your own things. What about a pair of lightweight shorts/trousers with zip pockets, or a pair of cargo pants with detachable legs (so that they convert into shorts)? I find these very useful for travelling.

Other than that a water bottle and iodine-based water purification tablets are absolutely essential.

IceCube
Travellers' Cheque. They're so light and can be magically turned into anything you wish in Thailand, and practically everywhere I mean.

joezaz
You could buy her a travel wallet.... either one to hold all documents and passport or one with a string attached to hide money inside clothing. Also water purification tablets are very handy!!!!

A nice little compact mirror...you can get very pretty ones..even engraved and my compact mirror was often the only mirror for miles when I was traveling....it takes up no room at all and is practical and yet pretty.

I went to Thailand for 6 months and I took nothing but a small duffel bag that contained, 1 pair of jeans, 1 casualdressy shirt, a few pairs of shorts, T-shirts, socks etc.

EVERYTHING is cheap in Thailand (I returned with a suitcase that I bought there and it was full of more clothes, souvenirs etc.

She needs to take a pair of flip-flops, a bandanna, and some quality (but broken in) running shoes.

You could get her cheap MP3 player or a novel for those long waits in the airport. There is an awesome artsy map of Bangkok and Chiang Mai that are essential if she plans to spend any time in these 2 cities. Check them out, they are quite original (I bought both online after I returned, I gave my originals away prior to leaving Thailand.

you could get her spare memory cards for her digital camera as these fill up pretty quickly when travelling.

Otherwise, there are some useful security products for backpacks....

A swiss army knife is always helpful when backpacking. An inflatable pillow will help to get some rest when stuck in odd places. A deck of cards to play solitaire will keep the mind active in times of extreme boredom, when batteries on the phone and iPod are long dead. Compression bags are great to keep clothes compact and dry. A waterproof ponch that can also be staked as a tarp is a godsend (available at the Army Surplus store). Remember, this ain't no disco!

Find out what she needs. A good pair of socks. Corn plasters. A first aid kit. Top up for her mobile phone. A pack of draw your own postcards and some 'sharpie' pens. Extra storage for her digital camera. Some olive oil soap. (you can wash everything with that - hair, body, clothes, dishes.) A silly hat.
