You have not, so far got any intelligent or knowledgeable answers, otherwise I would not answer your question. I know the cities, after visits to both, and having a friend in Beijing. It is an era of massive change, and opportunity. The younger Chinese have been given the chance to do the things that Westerners and citizens from Asian countries like Japan and Malaysia have; to make money, and enjoy life. The State still restricts freedom of protest, as democratic countries have, but life has improved dramatically, since Chairman Mao's death. Thousands now drive cars and are buying their own flats. It is different, however, in rural parts of the country, where poverty and corruption still remain.

Living in China is amazing! I lived in Shanghai for over a year, and during that time I had the opportunity to visit over 30 different cities (Beijing twice). As the last person posted, the rural areas are a lot different from the cities. Living in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and even Guangzhou is relatively easy.

Everyday in China is like an adventure....finding good places to shop, good places to eat, and just the day to day stuff was always interesting. There were good times (those times when people could understand me clearly, and I got downtown without paying 70 kuai) and bad times (those times when I was stared at, called a stupid foreigner, or couldn't figure out where I was) If you are really interested in Chinese culture or already have some understanding, life in China is really amazing - especially if you've lived in a foreign country before. There were a few people I knew who just could not adapt, and spent all of their time with other Americans. These people had a great time, but didn't really learn any Chinese outside of club names and their own addresses :)

If you have an open mind and are at least a little knowledgeable as far as Chinese language/culture are concerned, then living in China will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life......

Well yes pollution in North China is bad, Beijing is very bad and anyone with breathing problems need to be aware.
I left there after a few years recently and would warn anyone that Beijing is now a building site for the next games, they will stage it well, but at this time be aware.
Beijing is safe and night life is very good, great food to be had also.
