Where is the best place to visit in SE Asia?

Malaysia - it's fantastic! It's got something for everyone. If you want a more traditional holiday, as per previous suggestions, you could try Penang. It's quite touristy and busy, lots of nightlife, restaurants, food markets etc and big sky scraper hotels. You can also visit the Snake Temple, the Butterfly Farm or take the funi up Penang Hill for the views. The night markets are pretty impressive too.

However, I prefer Langkawi. It's a less touristy, quieter version of Penang. Fab beaches, and if you stay close to town - the Pelangi Beach, the Holiday Villas etc - there's more than enough to keep you entertained. The island is absolutely stunning and there are hundreds of deserted islands dotting the area - you can take a day trip out to one of these and just chill - it's fab. Try Bon Ton for a really good meal - there's a nice bar there too. It's also worth taking a trip up the cable car - the views are fantastic! If you're looking for something more peaceful, special and luxurious try the Andaman, the Datai or Tanjung Rhu - they're all superb hotels with amazing service and facilities.

I'd also recommend spending a couple of days in KL - the nightlife is great, as is the shopping. Try Bangsar for bars and restaurants and for the night market on Sundays, Heritage Row for cool bars and clubs. Zouk is the superclub and has international DJs pretty much all the time, although Velvet Underground on Wednesdays is 80's music (more my scene). China Town is great for shopping and knock offs, and Bukit Bintang is great for just shopping - there are loads of food markets in the area where you can try all the local delicacies.

If you're more interested in nature, try Borneo. In Sarawak, visit the Mulu Caves - they're the largest in the world and they're in a remote jungle location. You can stay in a traditional Iban longhouse and have a completely different experience. Kuching is the capital of Sarawak, and it's a great little city with a really interesting culture and history. Otherwise, in Sabah you can climb Kota Kinabalu, visit the Orang Utan sanctuaries, see turtles hatching or chill on the beach.

Have a wonderful time!

Penang in Malaysia, a rich island in cuture, excellent cheap food, shopping and beaches. I also recommend the Cameron Highlands, beautifully cool after being in humid Penang.

I have been fortunate to have visited many countries the BEST by a huge margin is Indonesia, in fact visiting it should be compulsory!!!!!!! But stay away from Bali, you can find crouds of drunken white men in Britain!!!

Vietnam
Amazing place. great people pretty much ZERO crime for foreigners. No agravated assault etc. Can play it as cheap or luxurious as you wish. Country has great temples, pagodas, history. The language is written in a european type script and afte a while yu should be able to decipher signs etc quite easily, compared to some of the other countries.

Can be used s a launching point for trips over to Cambodia or laos. You would probably have to change planes at Bangkok, so you could get off the plane and spend few days there. Singapore is nice and soooo clean!

Indonesia would be really nice to visit. The country is really rich in culture. Each region has its own uniqueness, and there are lots of traditional activities you can see. If you're more interested in modernism, the big cities offer those, too. or if you're interested in nature, there are lots of mountains (e.g. sunrise watching in Bromo is really famous for its beauty), beaches (Bali and Lombok are really famous for this), or you can just visit the country sides and see how the villagers lead their daily life. In general, Indonesians are very friendly. More over, everything there is very cheap =)

The best places to visit in South East Asia are:

Bali - if you are looking for sun, sea, culture
Singapore - for something a bit more metropolitan, with good shopping and culture
Malaysia - go to K.L during certain times of the year and they have the Malaysian mega sale with great discounts all over the country. But other places in Malaysia have some great beach hotels.

The answer depends very much on what you want to do and how you are traveling. That said, though my favorite site was the Temples of Angkor, my two favorite places for visiting were Chiang Mai in Thailand, and Luang Prabang in Laos.

Thailand was great, and Chiang Mai in northern Thailand was my favorite city there. There's tons to do and see, and it has a much more relaxed atmosphere than Bangkok. The Doi Suthep temple was beautiful. You can arrange treks to hill tribes, learn Thai cooking, visit caves and hot springs, and rent scooters to tour the countryside. And it's the best place to eat Khao Soi, which is my favorite Thai dish.

Luang Prabang was similarly relaxed. You can take a trip up or down the Mekong River to get there. There are many gorgeous temples in the city. The water falls at Kuang Si are a beautiful place to spend an afternoon swimming and hiking. There are also numerous places that will arrange hill tribe treks. The only bad thing is that you can't rent a motor scooter for traveling the countryside.

Both places have beautiful night markets and are full of fellow tourists. There are a lot of great places in SE Asia, but these two really stood out to me.

Ankor wat is stupefying.I mean after 4 days I wsasnt "templed out" like I have been before.
In northern Cambodia there is a place called preah Vihear. It is a real adventure getting there from THE CAMBODIAN SIDE.The last stand of the Khmer rouge was here and the 360 view shows why. That really blew me away, that place

Terri
hmm.. i would want to visit cambodia and see angkor wat and the people. i know thailand has a great beach, but don't know the name of it.. you have too many options.. including laos, vietnam.. and most of their stuff are inexpensive.. food and hotels.. i hope to travel to my homeland someday.
