Lots of pointless "I wouldn't go" answers here! (Why waste time saying that?)

For snorkelling and diving I thought Phi Phi and that Coast (Andaman) was great. Though there's loads of rivalry between the dive schools on opposite coasts - some intructors swear their side is best and haven't even visited the other coast!

Shopping - Bangkok or Chaing Mai, depends what you are looking for. Chat-u-chak weekend market in Bangkok is definately worth a visit - It's massive! (The largest market in Asia poss??)

Peace - Inner peace try one of the Wats (temples), Outer peace avoid peak season and the big touristy spots (Though even Koh Samui has it's quiet spots.)

Culture is everywhere.. Chat to people! Many Thai's speak great English. I recommend Krabi - friendly people, not too many tourists.

Tigers - I was told "no tiger's now, only in zoo", but there is a tiger temple worth visiting - the tiger's are kept by the monks, sorry can't remember the name, I didn't go - would've liked to.

Good cheap massages on Koh Phi Phi and Krabi

Enjoy your trip, Thailand is a beautiful country! 2 weeks isn't long though, I was there for 3 months earlier this year and barely scratched the surface.

I am British and live in Chiang Mai in Thailand in the North..

I would start by going to Ko Phangan a beautiful tropical island, to relax in a hammock and read and swim and eat beautiful food. Its a lovely island really nice people and a perfect way to start a holiday. Then for the last week I would come up to Chiang Mai for the amazing food and Temples and Mountains and Views. They have elephant rides through the jungle which is mindblowing, and the people are so friendly. And of course the wonderful markets we have here to buy pressies for everyone back home.
Have a look at Chiang Mai at www.1stopchiangmai.com and Koh Phangan at www.phanganisland.com...
You'll have great time you wont want to go home...

Some helpful phrases for you

Sawadee Kap/Ka = Hello and goodbye men say Kap ladies say Ka
Kop khun Kap/Ka= Thankyou
Ped nid noi =Little spice when ordering food
Chock dee kap/ka=good luck

Have a fab time see you in Chiang Mai maybe

The people who have answered this question by saying " you couldn't pay me to go" or "you would never get me there"! have any of you actually been? i bet not so dont judge a place if you've never been.Thailand is basically heaven! lovely people,Good food, hot weather all year round and beautiful views and scenery make this place a very addictive place to visit. Yes it has prostitute's making a living as it pays good money to support there family's, yes it does have its crime (very little) but so does everywhere but one thing for sure is not everywhere would you always get a smile from a complete stranger.
One thing i learn ed from my experience in Thailand is that most of the people have next to nothing but are happy and appreciate life and there country. In some western countries people have a lot more and its still NEVER enough.

snow_dog_babe
I went to Phucket,Phi Phi island and Koh Samoui, hired a fishing boat and went snorkelling in the crystal clear sea. I would go back there as it so cheap and full of culture.

This has been a place that I have dreamed about going since I first heard about it in a travel magazine - I take momentary trips in my imagination here - when cubicle life gets too much.

It is off the beaten path - but definetly worth it.

Obvious places are the Gulf of Thailand (Samui and Koh Pang Yan - good for Full Moons parties) - but this is getting a little too touristy now. You can go to the other side (Phuket etc.) which is stunning but after the Tsunami i believe a lot of local people were displaced by Corporates (Money!!!!) for building etc. So this might be a point of principle. However Tourism is their main source of income and without it!!!!!!!!

You could try Pattaya if you like the seedier side of things

Chiang Mai, much better than Bangkok. Best night market in the world and the city is beautiful. Then go on a three day treck from there where you stay in the hills with the villagers.
If you want beaches, avoid Samui and Phuket and go to Ao Nang near Krabi.
If you have time, visit Koh Sok National park. Not visited by many but so beautiful. You can stay in Koh Sok Jungle huts which are tree houses!

The Banyan Tree resort in Phuket Island

Nicola L
Bangkok - Grand Palace, canal markets, snake farm, china town, shopping precinct.
Kanchanaburi - Jeath War Museum, cemetry, elephant trek, waterfalls, rafting trip.
Mae Hong Song - hire bicycle & explore countryside, hire 4 wheel drive & driver & go to see hill tribes including long necks.
Chiang Mai - Night market, dinner at the cultural centre.
Krabi - explore the islands & loung on the beach.

Get some internal flights to save time, although the sleeper from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is pretty good too.

Wish I was going!

iwasnotanazipolka
Go north - Chiang Rai is wonderful. Non Kai near the Lao border is a perfect little town. Neither is geared for the bar girl and yabbos. To go snorkelling, I'd suggest Koh Chang, south east of Bangkok. Phuket is ok for that, too and if you avoid Patong Beach, the sex beach scene, and stay somewhere like Karon or Kata or even Phuket town, you will have a great time.

go to SAMUI

Go to Bangkok - Shangri La hotel has an ideal location for 3 nights. Stunning temples etc/amazing shopping/history.
Fly to Phuket - Amanpuri- the hotel of your dreams! or the more affordable Chedi hotel is on Pansea Bay which is the real stunning Phuket. Hire your personal boatman to take you to the best snorkelling/islands. Spend some time at Laguna area - more touristy but tasteful and worth visiting. Banyan Tree is heaven for pampering. Then spend some time in Chang Mai - for traditional crafts/way of life/trekking. Stop in Bangkok on return.
It makes you all excited thinking about it - I love Thailand!

Koh Samui - Nice for food + community + culture
Phuket - Nice for snorkelling + diving + exploring
Bangkok - For very cheap prices + life changing experiences
Krabi - Best for photos - underwater + on dry land

I really recommend a few nights in Bangkok not too many or it gets too much to cope with. As it gets very busy. Then travel over to Koh Samui. Its so peaceful and picturesque!

Tips...

Be careful on roads, gets very busy at some times....
Dont be offended if you cross the road and someone beeps at you, they are always doing it....
Barter, as much as possible, its cheap any way but you can get it even cheaper....
Use taxis, there great! Dont worry about being ripped off- to them they make you pay alot - to us its just extra pennies....
Dont take alot of stuff, in fact - take an empty suitcase, and buy every thing there! You come home with more than you expect....

Take a look at all the actual photos on www.visualthailand.com and you should get all kinds of ideas. 2 weeks is a long time and you if got the funds, you should spend a couple days at the beach like Koh Chang, visit the waterfalls around Nakorn Nayok then head east to Khao Yai National Forest for animals in the wild, spend a couple days in Chiang Mai.

If cannot travel that much, look at the top ten things to do on www.visualthailand.com , plus the 10 best shopping areas, and the 10 best day trips outside of Bangkok

2 weeks is plenty of time to see many things

All the actual photos makes a picture worth a thousand words
