I am a wide reader but became tame as I grew older, so I love many books & admire many writers.
But the single most influential book in my life is still the Bible. |

The Bible will always be #1
Writer: Alex Haley. The writer who traced his family roots going all the way back to the 1700's exposing the dirty slave trade movement in the United States. He told the real nasty american history that is not taught in public schools. He revealed the naked truth about early america. True stories the U.S. government don't want folks to know. |

written by nobel prize winner pearl s. buck, my personal favorite is the good earth (pulitzer winner for novels). it's about our basic relationship with the earth and how we gain strength and sustenance from it. altho setting was in china, i think most filipinos can relate to it too. |

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I didn't want to read it at first but it was a homeroom assignment by my teacher in high school. Anyway, I am thankful I did.
It was my first glimpse into reality - at how frivolous and materialistic some people could be and what they'd do to get what they want. It also taught me that first impression is not to be relied upon if you were to judge a person. Fortunately in this story, the ending was a happy one with 2 couples ending in happy marriages. |

Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet.
I read the book when I was I think ten and it made such an impression in me that my views in and about life, love, family, spirituality etc. in life are basically founded on his thoughts.
Kahlil Gibran on love:
...For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning...
...Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love...
...Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips... |
