Review of Singapore Cinemas
Cathay
Cathay has one of the best systems for letting you choose your seats at their counters. Their webby, although not user friendly, still gets the job done and is miles ahead of Shaw, though falls behind GV. They are pretty punctual in showing their films so it's best to go early.
Orchard Cineleisure
This cinema has the best audio and visual quality around. Most of the screens there are THX certified, though sometimes their bass level can be a tad too high. It used to be my favorite cinema but nowadays there tend to be a lot of kids and teenagers which totally spoils the movie experience for me. They like to eat and talk loudly in the cinema. Most of them go there for outings, as poseurs, etc. and not to enjoy the film itself. Avoid this place during school holidays at all costs! There are a few new screens there but I dislike the layout. The new screens are too near the audience and are rather cramped. You really have to angle your head upwards even if you are sitting at the back rows. But I still go to this cinema religiously because they show quite a bit of good films which are not shown anywhere else.
They have quite a lot of fastfood there. BK, Subway, KFC, Long John and Yoshinoya. Their new basement food area has reopened. Now there's Cafe Cartel, kebabs and new food court stalls (and a Pastamania at the 3rd floor). The Viet stall is really really good. I tried the pork chop rice and the chops were the best I'd ever tasted. There's this BBQ-ed taste of bak-gwa yet the meet was so tender, came with chopped peanuts and a sour/spicy sauce too. Two thumbs up! Oh yah they have Phin's Steakhouse too, though always not many people.
.........................................
Eng Wah
Eng Wah cinemas are generally very sloped with high ceilings. Thus no problems if a tall fella is in front of you.
Suntec
Some of the screens here have couple seats which is basically a 2 seater leather sofa. This ensures privacy as each sofa is a booth in itself. Nice place for a couple to go.
.........................................
Golden Village
In general, GV has plush seats which is high enough to rest the head. The armrest at most of their cinemas can be lifted up. I like the online ticketing system too. So far I never had problems with it. The only gripe I have is that they don't allow you to choose your seats when you buy tickets at the counter. Another thing is that they start their movies at least 15 minutes after the stated time. They are very strict about bringing outside food in. So its best to stuff any outside food in your bags beforehand.
Great World
This place is usually crowded with families with kids and Caucasians. One interesting thing to note is that, due to the layout of the cinema, it is easy to sneak into other screens when you have passed through the ushers. The ultra luxurious (and expensive) Gold Class is there too. Haven't got a chance to experience it yet though. The IMAX cinema is there too. The seating is important for IMAX shows, so do get your tickets early.
Marina Square
This cinema is a major nightmare to find if you have never been there before. It is also the place for the regular Singapore Film Society screenings.
Plaza Singapura
This place has become the cinema I frequent most often. This is probably due to the fact that there are 10 screens there and hence there are a pretty good variety of films showing there at any one time. Mornings are generally quite empty except for loners like me.
The Indonesian grilled chicken stall at the food court is nice and always has a long queue. The ban mian stall there also sells the green ban mian. They have BK, Macs, Mos and KFC there too.
Tiong Bahru Plaza
This cinema is kind of sub-par compared with the other GV cinemas because the seats are not the head-reaching type and the legroom is not as good. This place is generally very deserted, even on weekends.
.........................................
Shaw
Shaw's online ticketing system totally sucks. I can't even access the webby most of the time! Their tickets are also quite lousy because it's made of soft paper. Not durable for keeping. Shaw employees are generally older than the other cinemas so, not a good idea for the underaged to sneak into any films there. Their nachos sell for $4.
Shaw Center (Orchard)
I only frequent this cinema because sometimes movies are shown there which are not shown anywhere else. They recently renovated Lido 1 and 2. Lido 1 now has less seats and actually looks smaller. The seats at Lido 1 and 2 are also plusher and reaches the head with improved legroom. The rest of their screens however, remain the same with rocky chairs (literally), non-head-reaching seats and cramped legroom.
Shaw Towers (Beach Rd)
This cinema has four screens. Prince 1,2 and Jade 1,2. Prince 1 is arguably one of the largest cinema in Singapore together with Lido 1 at Shaw Center. Legroom at all 4 screens is pretty bad and very often you have to stand up when someone wants to pass you. They have couple seats which looks like bus seats. Good thing about this cinema is that it is generally very empty. This means that for weekend shows you can most likely get good seats without online booking. This cinema is also used for the annual Singapore International Film Festival around April/May.
They have Subway and BK there. The food court has a famous Taiwanese stall selling a mean dish of pork chop rice (ranks 2nd after the cineleisure pork chops) and 3 cups chicken noodles. The food outlet opposite the box office is famous for popiah. The ramen stall outside BK is operated by a Japanese.
Being a swashbuckling archaeologist, I travel a lot.
Below is the best site for travel planning, and has great prices!
Cheers,
Indy
