It's unclear who actually killed Magellan based from the only historically recorded account of the battle, that of Pigafetta's. He said that the natives ganged up on Magellan, resulting in their captain's death.

But we Filipinos, so proud of our own, agreed and credited Lapu-lapu for the kill. Heck, we even teach that in school.

The same way we teach our children that Agapito Flores invented the flourescent lamp when flourescence in an evacuated glass tube had already been known to scientists since the early 18th century.

It's *NOT* universally accepted by historians that Lapu-lapu killed Magellan. Only in the Philippines, baby.

When the Spaniards came back to the Philippines, Lapu-lapu is nowhere to be found. Thus, he probably died of old age or disease.

The exact cause of his death is unknown up to this day.

it isn't clear whether lapulapu really killed magellan. it might have been one of his men who did. but for history's sake, we say it was lapulapu. but could it have been butete? hehe...

as to who killed lapulapu? nothing in history mentioned about the death of lapulapu. we can only surmise that he died of old age or, he might have been wounded in the battle and died later on for tetanus or infection or loss of blood. but could it have been butete again? hehe...

Edit: history might be re-written as to where the battle really took place. there has been archaeological findings that seem to point out that the Mactan Pigafetta wrote is not the island of Lapulapu City but that of another small island (Mactang) which is part of Camotes Islands.

Lapu-Lapu was the king of Mactan, an island in the Visayas, Philippines, who is known as the first native of the archipelago to have resisted Spanish colonization. He is now regarded as the first Filipino hero.[1]

On the morning of April 27, 1521, Lapu-Lapu and the men of Mactan, armed with spears and kampilan, faced Spanish soldiers led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. In what would later be known as the Battle of Mactan, Magellan and several of his men were killed.

According to Sulu oral tradition, Lapu-Lapu was a Muslim chieftain,[2] and was also known as "Kaliph Pulaka".[3] The people of Bangsamoro, the Moro homeland in the Philippines, consider him to be a Muslim and a member of the Tausug ethnic group.[4] A variant of the name, as written by Carlos Calao, a 17th century Chinese-Spanish poet in his poem Que Dios Le Perdone (Spanish, "That God May Forgive Him") is "Cali Pulacu".[5]

The 1898 Philippine Declaration of Independence refers to Lapu-Lapu as "King Kalipulako de Maktan".[6] In the 19th century, the reformist Mariano Ponce used a variant name, "Kalipulako", as one of his pseudonyms.[7]

Your question reminded me when a Spaniard five years ago here in Spain told me that "they have some of the remains of Lapu-lapu". When I asked where, he turned his back and walked away.
Since the death of Lapu-Lapu can only be speculated as a missing piece of a puzzle, everybody can build their own interpretation.

Who killed Magellan? Lapu-lapu. This may not also be true but who am I to disapprove.

But one thing is for sure, the death of Magellan did not make the Spaniards reluctant to colonize the Philippines. If the Spaniards killed Lapu-lapu, who knows. I will give a second thought if I can make history repeat itself.

Lapu Lapu killed Magellan

But there is no information about the death of Lapu-Lapu, a lot in Cebu say that he has died of illness and some say that he died because he's too old.

it could have been lapu-lapu or one of his men. the accuracy is not very clear though because of the absence of written records back then. the crew that went back to Spain without magellan and most of the crew may not have even mentioned lapu-lapu's name. i don't know if antonio pigafetta the historian on the voyage was able to make it back and recorded lapu-lapu's name as magellan's assassin or killer which i doubt.

It was Lapu-Lapu and his men that killed Ferdinand Magellan on April 27, 1521. It is not known who dealt the fatal blow but Lapu-Lapu himself is credited with delivering the kill shot on Ferdinand Magellan, as the chieftain cut the Explorer down with a single blow of his giant-*** two-handed scimitar.
It is said in the island that the chieftain (Lapu- Lapu) did not die or that at least nobody ever saw him die and the islanders believe he has been turned into a stone and is forever guarding the seas of Mactan. Fishermen in the island city point to a stone shaped like a man in the deep and they throw coins at it as a way of asking permission to fish in the chieftain’s seas.

Another popular story passed on from generation to generation of island residents says Lapu-Lapu became the statue placed on a pedestal at the center of the city plaza. This statue faces the old City Hall building, where the mayors used to hold office, and once held a crossbow in the immortal stance of someone about to shoot an arrow at an enemy. The people decided to replace Lapu-Lapu’s crossbow with a bolo after three mayors of the city died one after the other from a heart attack.

It is over-confidence that killed Ferdinand Magellan.

As for Lapu-lapu, no one killed him. I think he lived forever.
