Who thinks America is a boring place?

I'm an American and I love this country but I think it's totally bland.
I've heard several people who's lived in Seoul or Tokyo and whenever they come home to U.S., they immediately want to go back saying how unexciting this place is. I think there's some truth to that. They also say people here are rude, lazy, & service is terrible compared to other developed countries.
Additional Details
**Correction**
The people that I was talking about are Americans that left for other countries and their views/observations upon returning to USA.

LOL....A vacation is always nicer than where you live. Most people think that its boring where they live, although they can find plenty to do when relatives from out of town come to visit. Some people here are rude and some of the service is terrible, but you will find that no matter where you go.

I think it's what you want in a city/country that's most important.
I guess your friends thought Tokyo / Seoul is "more exciting" than where you live. (Would help if we knew where they're comparing it too.)
Of course Tokyo or Seoul is much more exciting compared to where they're used to living. There are new shops to visit, different people to meet, a new language to learn etc.
And Tokyo and Seoul are 2 of the biggest cities in east Asia. Of course it's going to be exciting and fun.
But that doesn't mean America as a whole is "boring" compared to Tokyo and Seoul. I found NYC as exciting if not more so than Tokyo.

Also living in the suburbs and living in a city are 2 totally different experiences one can go through. But does it mean one is better than the other? No of course not. Many people will choose to live in a quiet peaceful suburb rather than living in the hustle and bustle of a major city. And vice versa. Some people will think living in the suburbs was a boring experience where "nothing happens".
So it all comes down to what you want in a city / lifestyle.

Remeber, people in Hawaii want to move to the mainland and people on the mainland want to move to Hawaii.
Doesn't mean one is better than the other.

But at the same time, living in a different country WILL open up your horizons and broaden your mind. It will change the way you think in a drastic way. So if you're contemplating on going to Japan or Korea I think it's always a great idea to move around. Unless you want to stay where you are that is, which is not a bad thing either. If you're happy with where you are now, then that makes you a lucky person.

As for the rude/lazy people and bad service I agree.
But this is compared to MY experience in Japan and the US.
Others may have different experiences with different people.
At the same time though, I get more smiles and hearty hellos in a day in LA (whre I live now) than I did in a month in Tokyo. Which I enjoy tremendously. So which is better? I dunno but for me, LA is much easier to live the life I want to live. As much as I love the Tokyo city life, I choose to live in LA by the beach.
So again the question would be what kind of lifestyle do YOU want?

Not only boring, but embarrassing.

I mean, outside of the US, who wants to admit they're American these days?

We're the laughing stock of the world.

Places are not boring. It's what you do in them. I find the USA an exciting country when I visit it. The vastness of the country and wide variety of scenery is awesome. I'm looking forward to my next road trip in the States. People in America tend to be outspoken but that does not necessarily make them rude. Service in the US is far superior to that in the UK.

America is very boring. I hate it here. However I could never live in another country. Though I love Tokyo, it's too fast paced. Nothing stays the same and it's constant change and the society is falling apart. I love Tokyo and miss the arcades, shopping, stores and restaurants and especially karaoke box. However, small houses and no privacy with people packed in are hardly worth it. I think we take a lot for granted in America. I'm glad I have space, freedom, food and don't have to work 6 days a week for 12 hours a day. Japanese lifestyle is hard and depressing. In fact most countries have horrible lifestyles.

I don't think it's because America is unexciting. Look at how fast paced Tokyo life is. It's crazy. Sure if you get used to that anything else seems slow. Ever met anyone who lives or did live in New York? Same thing. They can't stand a slow life. The people here are rude, lazy and service is horrible. Over 60% of Americans are overweight and the education level is one of the worst in the world for countries of our stature. I think our society has a long way to go and I, for the most part, hate Americans. However I could not see myself living anywhere else. I spent two weeks living in an apartment in Tokyo and that was enough. I missed burritos, driving, space, privacy, and quiet. Those are all things you just can't get in those countries. We could change all of that, but to do that you would have to get rid of "big business". Corporation and democracy destroyed our country. When you stop learning you stop growing and our country just isn't growing. People here are stupid. That's why america is boring. Because people are too stupid to make it exciting. Most people think the most exciting thing is watching football, drinking beer, going hunting, and working on a truck. That basically sums up our society.

i half agree with u...its kinda exciting here depending where u live, and i live in the suburbs so we need a car for everything but im korean and ive been to seoul many times and i love it there so much more

No. 100% NO!!!

There is no such thing as a boring place, much less an entire country. If they think America is boring, they are the ones who are boring, not the country. To one person, sitting on the porch reading a book is fun, to another it is boring. Who is right? If you are one of those adrenalin junkies that has to live on the edge, everywhere will be boring if you are lacking that element of danger.

The people you talked to are shallow and small minded. Usually, when one accuses another person of being rude, that is just a mirror of themselves.

America is a great place. Pleasure is in your state of mind, not at a 24/7 SIX FLAGS. They need to grow up, BIG TIME.

By the way, why is this question in the Japan area?

I don't think America in general is a boring place. But if people go back to their hometown located in a rural area from Tokyo, Japan, I would assume that they would want to go back to Tokyo because Tokyo is a big city where there are so many exciting things to do like in LA or NY.

And also when Americans go to especially an Asian country like Japan, they stand out in the crowds. Some American who used to live in Japan told me that he was somebody in Japan but he is nobody in the states because he looked just like other Americans and nobody paid attention to him. So he told me that he would want to go back to Japan with his Japanese wife and retire there.

dude get outta the barn and go places and do stuff. I know for instance Chicago is awesome.

p.s. you need to have an open mind. Thats the key to having fun.

Yes this country is kinda boring. However, I cant imagine that anywhere else is much more exiting.

Sunidaze
I don't find it boring...I guess it depends on what your interests are and what you expect of others. Perhaps it's all in where they went as well. Perhaps they were bitchy, causing them to receive terrible service. I know plenty PLENTY of people not rude and lazy...but ya know what...I honestly could care less what people I have nor will I ever meet think. They don't like it...obviously they can stay home. I'm sure they'll be missed...maybe...doubtful.

I live in the UK and ive only been once, but it was the most fantastic place in my opnion ive ever been to. Ok, some places may be boring but its like that in every country. The USA is so diverse that everywhere is different.

i looked at the answers, and i can see that for most people, "there's no place like home" and for those who are not happy, then maybe "the grass is always greener on the other side" everyone has to make up their own minds on what they are happy with. when i'm in china with my wife i'm happy with her and for her, when we're in the u.s. she is happy with me and for me. you make your life what it is.

~J*me~
I agree with you kind of....I don't think its a boring place. America is what you make it and if you make it boring then DUH its going to be boring. I love it here and I never want to leave. If you don't like it....try going to Japan and see how it works out...it could be a lot of fun. Have you ever thought that people from Japan thinks it boring because they don't speak our language so they can't communicate with people from here that much!?! That's what happen to the exchange student we had come live with us.

Naw America aint boring it's just that you have to know where to go... and when you go to visit other countries it seems like that alot... i went on an expedtion to another country and i found it to be the worst but thats proberly because i dont speak the language as well as they do, and dont know who it rolls over there.... and its true in america there are rude, lazy, people but then aging there are hardworking, good, fellows who work hard... i guess it really just depends how and what you do in the country

Pikachu
Hum I don´t think USA is boring at all...
Countries and cultures are different all around the world. The Asian cultures is very very different of the Amercian Culture. Maybe that´s why they thought USA weird for them.
I like every single part of this world and the different cultures gives color and fun for life ;)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...all one has to do is look around and you'll see the excitement and variety that the US has to offer! I have been to many states....would love to see all of them eventually...and it never ceases to amaze me as to not only how beautiful it truly is, but how diverse the people and cultures are!! We are the land of immigrants...and our ancestors brought with them so much of their own culture...that's why we're referred to as the "great American melting pot"! So, how can it be boring?

Nope, America is not a boring place. There are some truth about our people being rude, lazy and service is poor but then again, which country is not. Have you been to China? The people are 100 times worst than America. If you complained to them, either they will shout back at you or just completely ignore you. There are so many things one can do in America too....and you can be bored if you know how to have fun.
