I say it's no laughing matter.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Aug 8, 2006): The iconic leatherback turtle is virtually extinct in Malaysia, and there are fears their numbers are on the decline worldwide as habitats vanish, according to a United Nations report.
The report released through the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) says the population is also waning due to legal and illegal egg harvesting and turtle hunting, while global climate change could affect breeding.
Malaysia, which in past years offered turtle nesting as a tourist attraction in eastern Terengganu state, offers one of the "most dramatic" examples of decline in a marine turtle population, it says.
------------------------
In the early 90s, I was helping to produce a video for Greenpeace International on the killing and commercialization of turtles in East&West Malaysia and Indonesia which detailed the local habitants in Malaysia's and Borneo's coastline making a livelihood of slaughtering turtles for food and souvenir making (objects from turtle shells). Despite continuous efforts to highlight the plight of the protected endangered species, both government ministries, departments and local authorities never did much to protect the exploitation and slaughter of turtles.
Now that the turtles are definitely extinct, we have nothing but pictures and museums as information references - a truly sad situation when it could have been saved.
Governments cannot help much if there is little or half-hearted enforcements; laws are not in place to prosecute; education is non existent to inculcate the value of animal life and their existence. As a people - Malaysians, Indonesians - have nothing to be proud of. Malaysia boleh apa? |

What 's new? They steal even brand new aluminium gates from brand new vacant houses and the used,I mean used cans ( beer cans, for instance) from some residential areas. They steal, because they are lazy and they want easy and fast cash.Very saddening. |

get the facts right. Malaysia doesnt steal the eggs, some inconsiderate malaysians do. it is against the law to take turtle eggs for consumption, but sometimes, and for alot of these poor malaysians it is the only way they could earn money. if you have not seen kids running on the streets bare foot with a bag or two of these turtle eggs, you have to come to sabah. by no means am i condoning these activities, or finding justifications but without greater awareness in the public and without a better living standard for all malaysians, people will continue to sell and buy (sorry to say my mom used to buy too) them. |
