Okay, here's the deal. China has 1.3 to 1.6 billion people. That is more than four times the population of the United States. The vast majority of those people are slowly climbing from extreme poverty toward a better life. That means more educational opportunities, maybe an A/C unit, a television, and higher incomes. Despite what you may have heard about China having low wages, which is true to a certain extent, wages in China have risen almost 4x in the past 30 years. This is a remarkable achievement!

So, as a result of economic liberalization, China has the ability to develop, market, and ship products made in its coastal areas all around the world. These products are not all cheap toys, but are becoming increasing sophisticated as technology transfers increase. For example, in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, they are making microprocessors, hearing aids, digital cameras, plasma TVs, and countless other products. And because of their proximity to Shanghai, and the major shipping yards on the Pacific, they are able to ship their products around the world.

Having the Chinese connected to the global economy is certainly a good thing! There are a certain amount of jobs being outsourced to China from developed countries (manufacturing), but increased economic cooperation is sure to benefit all parties. Thirty years ago, before economic liberalization by Deng Xiaoping began, the developed world knew very little about what was happening inside China. Today, they are in the news constantly. And what goes on over there, be it political, environmental, social, or economical, has an effect on our lives here in the developed world.

Now is not the time to be afraid of China. The Chinese people are friendly, and are learning more about us every day. We should do the same.

The cost of production and labour is lower and the profit margin is higher for the manufacturer. It depends on howyou view it. From the prospective of several countries, it is not a good thing coz it takes away the job from their countries. But to China it is a good thing coz it improve the employment rate over there

A Barbie doll costs $20 in the US, China only gets about 35 cents of that. ...

That's the reason why...

That answer is too simple. Labor rates are, for example, lower in Bangladesh than in China.
It is a question of issues like terms of trade, factor productivity, and specialization (China exports X but imports Y and does not have a trade surplus with every single country in the world). I think you better ask this question in the Economics section.

By the way, the world's largest exporter (by value) is Germany, not China.

If you can remember, the US was very "scared" of Japan in the late 1980s (gee, they bought Pebble Beach!!) and of Mexico in the early 1990s (the big sucking sound of American jobs going south of the border). But things didn't go as doomssayers said it would.
If US loses competitiveness in one area / sector, they gain it in another area / sector.

Dudeman
because chinese labour is cheaper than labour in america or other countries. It's a bad thing for foods, as 80% of exported chinese food items are poisonious or fail tests.

onegater
Cheap slave labor, no labor laws so they can work kids 16 to 18 hours a day, no environmental laws, no occupational safety laws, they don't have to pay for liability insurance, they don't have to pay for health care and dental insurance, they don't have to pay for retirement benefits, etc, etc.

Meghan
because they allow child labor.... it's a very GOOD thing! i mean...we need our shoes don't we?

It's a bad thing for your local community bcuz that means all the money is going into other countries for cheap labor.. and their products and generally poorly built.

China has the biggest manpower in the world. Things are cheap in China that is why it causes the China become a largest manufracture in the world. China also has a lot of undevelope land, so it is cheap to open a factory and hire cheap labors on those land. Can you afford exspensive stuff?
