Why are most schools in the Philippines so strict with guys' haircut?

Why are most schools in the Philippines so strict with guys' haircut? back in high school, the head of the Prefect of Discipline office even interrupted our class and cut my hair infront of my classmates coz he said that they're too long!!!! it was so terrible that I have to had it fixed right after that day. well in fact, my hair weren't even touching my eyebrows!!! same treatment was done to my other classmates. why does it has to be like that? and also one time, I just had a new haircut for a day, but our professor thinks that my hair is still touching my ears. then she grab a pair of scissors and started cutting off my hair!!! I think this haircut being part of proper grooming as an explanation for this just isn't enough. why should filipino boys must have this kind of ideal haircut (as they say) like in this picture even when it doesn't suit everybody? anyone with similar experience?

btw, that pic above is not me.

It's part of the training for discipline, it conditions a student to conform with society's standard of what's presentable and what's not. Short hair also meant showing a clean image which translates to better public image for the school as it doesn't show unkempt students who look like they smoke weed and therefore reflects badly on the school administrator's ability to discipline their students. It harks back to the puritanical days of Catholic and Protestant schools run by Priests, Nuns and Pastors. In the Philippines, it also reflects the Chinese influence of Confucian ethics and filial piety.

Some schools like Ateneo have a name to carry so they want their students to look apropiate

Proper grooming. And we're not in Jesus' time that men having long hair is a fashion.

CHOCO CRUNCHIES
to discipline i guess....

we have the same case, that's why many guys in our school, including me, wanted to curse our PREFECT OF DISCIPLINE! grrrrrrrrrr...last tuesday, he cut some of my hair at the back in his own barbershop, i mean office in school, with 2 other classmates!

each school can make its own policy on behavior and grooming

Its called discipline and proper grooming standards. It might seem invasive but we are not like western countries who just do whatever we want. We produce a lot of good citizens because of the discipline that we learned from school and our traditions no matter how absurd it might seem.

The students of the school, reflects the school itself. If they tolerate long hairs, most people would assume that the school does not discipline their students well. Admit it, in our society, even today, most lang hair guys are still labelled as 'addict'.

anyway, personally, i don't like guys with long hairs...very untidy!

but then, it's your choice...

as the song goes...
.. anong paki mo, sa long hair ko
inggit ka lang, hindi ito sayo..
anong paki mo
sa long hair ko
inggit ka lang,
kase ika'y nakakalbo!
lol!

So teacher will see where your eyes are. They may not know that your looking at your crush, seatmate's test paper or maybe at someone's chest.

it's maybe a practice of discipline and cleanliness i think.
even us in school, they do cut our hair if it's too long.

when I was still in the Philippines, our school requires how long/short should both boys' and girls' hair is supposed to be... I think they do this in order for the students to look tidy, neat, and clean...

I guess... to maintain their good reputations..

you will know the answer of your question when you get into the CAT (Citizen's Army Training) or ROTC in college.

all of school administrators are tyrants.we came to school to learn not to govern by this stupid laws.in australia it does not matter how long or untidy your hair is as long you are always present at school and not being an idiot.i hate having my hair forcefully cuts by some tyrants.if i could sue them i will.they have got better things to do than looking for some one with a not so long hair.its to teach more.bugger them all.i would like to go back to my old school and comfront them about this issue.they are not mother ofr father. its my self and i will do what i want as long im learning what they are teaching me and not being an idiot.sux theeir stupid law.

Shienaran's answer is correct and I have to agree in most part except for the Chinese part. There I would have to add that all school, be it public or private conforms to having a boy's haircut be like a crew cut or a 2x3 type of haircut.

You can have long bangs, but your hair should be combed upwards so the bangs does not cover your face. you hair should be cut to show a clean outline of the ears and the back part should not touch your collar.

There are a few who can have their haircut done in another way, specially if they have special privelege with the school, I know of a student who was well connected with the former administration and he was given a letter asking for a different haircut. His ears are wrapped close since birth and the parents does not want the child to be teased, so he covers the ears with his hair. Some also have "poknut' or a 'piso' on their head so they want it covered, or their head is flat on one side so again they dont want their hair cut too short to show the discrepancy.

discipline should apply to everyone, and if the school policy says that the hair should be done in one style, therefor it should be followed. when you enrolled and entered school, you signed an agreement to follow the school regulations, which includes uniforms, haircuts, smoking, cheating, vandalism and the like. you can transfer to another school which allows different haircuts and hair colors.

so this is also a matter of choice, of choosing to follow the school's policies. The administrators and teachers would be remiss of their duties if they did not do their jobs.

You've got great answers already.

But, you forgot to tell us which school you went to.
For I do believe that is a bit too harsh. Or maybe if you went to a military school, maybe its not.

All schools in the Philippines have guidelines as to how students have to behave & conduct themselves as well as rules in personal hygeine & grooming.

If you sign up for a school that has those strict guidelines then you have to obey them. It will be part of your training to be a productive law abiding member of society & humanity. Our school also have strict rules with haircuts but generally not to that extreme.

mei
yes, it is a practice of discipline and good grooming especially if you're taking ROTC/military training in your senior year in High School. Even coloring of hair is not allowed too. They do it in my school at de la salle. They don't like your hair touching your eyebrows and from your ears ;)
