"cos you only meet those who are rich enough to migrate to another country. There are many who still live very poorly in their own country. But Chinese in general, are very hardworking people. They always work hard and work long hours to earn their living cost.

Will USA allow poor Chinese from China or Hong Kong step on her land???

Do you know how much the application charge for a tourist visa to USA? HK$880 (US$110) per person, non-refundable and we have to bank in the money before we fill in the application forms.

My answer to your question is, the rich people do various kinds of business, just like those rich people in anywhere of the world.

There are quite some rich people in Hong Kong, the richest man in Asia is Mr. Li Ka Sing and he is the No. 9 richest man in the world according to Forbes. Mr. Li is a well-known real estate developer, tele & communication company owner, hotel & catering business owner... etc. He is 78 years old and still working, may be 12 hours a day or even longer, that's how the rich people earn their fortune. Most men on this planet retired at the age of 65 or even earlier!

What you have seen are just only very few out of our 1.3 billion populaces that left China, most of us here (still living in China) are not rich but hard working and never can reach the word "luxury" no matter how hard or harder we work daily.

Hey, I've been there they aren't all rich they might make it look like that but its just a facade, there is a whole lot of poverty. The government doesn't do a good job of taking care of their people. The people are nice for the most part. They take nothing for granted, because they know what it is like not to have a lot. If you are in the cities then it looks like they are rich because of all the sky scrapers. If you want to see how it really is then you go out in the country or little citties.

Oh you have made me laugh - you are kidding right? Have you been there? There is so much poverty! Sure there are rich people (all over the world), but they are the minority!!!

A lot has been said about growth in China, but from what I have seen, all it means is this: People who at one time had NOTHING now have SOMETHING. People who may have literally been starving w/o a roof over their heads 40 years ago now have food to eat, clothes to wear, and a place to live (I mean the type of person, not an actual person!). They may even have a car (albeit a rusted-out dilapidated car) and a tv. But their standard of living is still well below that of a typical American. These days the standard of living is generally higher for everyone (except perhaps the folks in HK, as someone mentioned). Whether anyone is any happier or is treated any more fairly I do not know.
As for the rich people--well, labor costs and material costs is still absurdly low. . .and I am sure standards are not strictly obeyed, if any quality standards even exist. So if you have ten women working 12 hrs a day 7 days a week to make shoes for you and you pay them a pitiful wage w no benefits whatsoever (ha ha, what is that?), then yeah--you're going to make a big profit from that.
In other words, in China if you start ANY kind of business you WILL make money, at least for awhile, for 2 reasons 1. Low costs 2. no shortage of paying customers!!
I think those who move to the US know how to squeeze as much as they can from a dollar--ie, they are extremely disciplined and thrifty. They also have a true entrepreneurial spirit, and owning your business is always more profitable in the long run.

people from hongkong r generally rich, but those from mainland r mostly officials, officials in china r very very rich....

Not all of them are rich though. There are some filthy rich ones just like everywhere else and Chinese are business -minded , hard-working and determined people.

Anyone from a poorer foreign country has to be pretty wealthy to move to the USA anyway. You're just seeing a tiny cross-section of wealthy people from an enormous population of over a billion people. I don't think the percentage of wealthy to poor is any different in China compared to other countries. It's as if you were to eat in an upscale Indian restaurant and you'd be under the impression that all Indians there are rich. Of course, not true, but you're observing a specific group of people in a unique environment. Anyway, the wealthy Chinese where I live have multiple businesses and take every opportunity to make money.

I have to say that if you were to listen to people like remi, you would ptobably end up in the aryan brotherhood or klu klux clan or something..I have never seen so much B.S in an answer in my whole life

I have been to China twice and Hong Kong twice and you have a slightly distorted view of the living conditions or prosperity of them
Chinese or Hong Hong ex pats who live in America, obviously worked very hard to get where they are now, and many Chinese/HK people who came to america did so in appalling conditions and only after generations of hard work, do you see the effects today
China is in crisis at the moment, don't be fooled by the booming economy and olympics build-up.. communism is on the verge of collapse and people live in terrible conditions, with little or no amenities that we take for granted today..there is a discovery channel documentary called 'China's mega dam' which showed the forced resettling of millions of chinese people to build a dam and flood the historical three gorges burying ancient sites under billions of gallons of water
I have met countless Chinese people over there and some of the nicest most genuine people I have ever met were penniless and living on little or nothing. I am Irish, and the general feeling is that we are some of the nicest friendliest people in the world. but in truth , we aren't a patch on the chinese, they are unbelivably friendly and welcoming and will give you the shirt off their back
Hong Kong looks more opulent to the outside , because all you ever see is the big shopping districts or financial institutions that are a legacy from the time when the British ruled..
many people in HK are now struggling to find work and housing and now have to work up to 6 hours more per day to earn the same money that they did before the British handed it back to china, and there is a lot of people worried about the future there

so in short, don't listen to people like remi- he hasn't got a clue what he's on about

most own small businesses and since biz taxes are quite low, their keep most of them profits and with a good saving habit most can afford to live pretty comfortably.

those who are mega rich, well, it is no different in china, hk or anywhere in the world, usually through financial investments i.e. stocks and real estate. If you own land in china and hk, they worth millions now! As anywhere else, some riches come from not so legal sources.

There are a lot of rich people who live in China as well.

I think most people with money choose to live outside of China because China is a very rude and uncivilized society, where cars try and run pedestrians off the road when they are crossing the street on a green light.

In China you hear someone honking a lugie and spitting every two minutes like if there is something wrong with their throats.
In China people don't like to stand in line so they think there is nothing wrong with cutting in front of other who are waiting before them.
In China you also have a bunch of crooks and thieves, or what the Chinese might call them; cab drivers, and merchants.

So the point is i think most rich people choose to live outside of China is because they don't like how the Chinese people behave and how rude they are. However, most Chinese people don't know how rude they are because they've never seen what the outside world is like, so it's not entirely their fault for being such jerks in public.

Mainly in Hong Kong due to the city being the center for commerce. Chinese people have a tenasity for work and a mind that thinks profits.
