Why are some Malaysians so selfish? |
When our ancestors came here, they came for shelter and better life.
The history of Malacca started with an exile fleeing his place, the Chinese and Indians came here to run away from poverty on their lands.
Now, Indonesians and Bangladeshis coming to find a better life too, but they are being shunned at. Many of them are nice, only a few are not very standable.
The truth is, all Malaysians come to Malaysia from somewhere else, to find a better life. When others come, they claim this land as theirs, when it never, will never really be theirs, not to the Malays, not to the Chinese, not to the Indians.
So why must Malaysians be so selfish? Shouldnt we understand them better? Bcoz our ancestors came here for the same reason too? Shouldnt we accomodate them, and provide them space? We being Malaysians are not better than them, everyone is equal.
Discuss Additional Details Hush, I dun see any reasons why I am better than you, or why ur better than me.. Human life is just equal, my life is not more worthy than yours, u may be a criminal, but your life is just as equal as a saint's |

Thank you very much Yanar for a very civilized view on how humanity should behave. I get the point of Hush Puppies, of course it is the right of any country to reject the entry of anybody that it does not deem will do good for the country. I am not a very knowledgeable person, I don't have much knowledge of the Southern Filipinos who are giving the Philippines such a bad image to Malaysia. I think your government has all the rights to oblige, nay order these people to leave your country. It is the right of any government to do what it deems is for the good of its citizenry. It is the moral obligation of the government of my country to take care of its disgraceful citizens who are living abroad. But u know my country, it is saddled w/ so many economic woes, especially during these times, it hardly knows w/c to attend to first and w/c problems to prioritize.
Still, I see Malaysia as behaving so valiantly well in accepting those people probably thinking that such people probably have no other choice. A country tolerating illegal immigrants even if it's detrimental to its own internal affairs does such a heroic act - unless of course it also has its own ulterior motives. Well, I just don't understand. In my own country, even if it is not progressive, it will not waste time in booting out any illegal immigrant that is creating havoc to its own citizenry.
Finally, I would like to assure you that selfishness is a universal phenomenon. It is a human character and is not a result of cultural backgrounds or even race. Unless I'm mistaken of course. Yes, like u, I wish there was less selfishness everywhere. That way, life here on earth would be much better, what with all the daily problems and rigors of daily living that most of us all go through. |

The question is aren't about why some Malaysians are so selfish, but about security and control.
Take for example USA & Australia, both very successful country full of migrants. There were a long period of time, where the original settlers are totally ignored or even abused till now most didn't get back their lands or even receive their rights.
There's also a period of time where everyone comes in and nobody can identify and crime rates went sky high. For e.g. my friend from Italy commented, Italy used to be so safe till the foreigners came and guns, drugs, robbery went up. And it's difficult to identify because they can use different ID's or just run away to another state/country temporary.
It's the mind that controls and dominate the best.
In reality not only in Malaysia, open your eyes look around.
If there's no control on the input of foreigners the side effects would be:
- crime rates
- competitive job opportunities
- and the list goes on.
I have personally worked with many Indonesians, for those that are hardworking they've managed to get permit. Paid air ticket & holiday to go back at least 1-2X per year. I've known some that gave birth here and after 10 years automatically they became a Malaysian here as well.
Do not ever say that Malaysians never accommodate them, in Petaling Jaya alone there are more than 5 settlements where foreigners been living for years, no need to pay rent & even for utilities like water & electricity. They just took from neighboring and often broke the pipes and connect to their housing areas.
Just opposite my area, there's this land where foreigners been living at least 8 years, every time I passed by it as a school kid. I frozed because the men there will tease or follow me. Sometimes they flash themselves and took drugs. Often police came to catch them. The worst was when there were gang fight and if it's wasn't for my apartment's security guards the gang would have entered our apartment. Eventually I found out on that night an Indonesian got chopped off his hand and eventually died right in front of our condo. when the government took back the land for development, each housing occupant is paid and even offered flats. How do I know all these? Because I work & are friends with some of them personally.
You should view things based on true incidents and why some people reacted that way. Do you know how it feels if your teacher, your neighbor comes telling you how their foreign maid abused their baby/parents or etc. ran off with their money or put poison in their food.
If there are too much negative complains, automatically it's categorized and blacklisted. Eventually even downsized in demand.
If you ask certain multinational companies and factories, why they would rather hire people from Vietnam and Nepal when they been previously hiring ppl. from Indonesia and Bangladesh, their HR can provide an intensive report. Everyone wants to make money and business not trouble or problems. In Singapore, they filter and only hire workers from certain countries to maintain security.
I'm sure if a certain worker is hardworking, their permit will be renewed. If you've never met any of them, I can introduce to you all those who are still working here for over 5yrs. and each year their annual pay increases. |

Fact 1# The orang asli are the original settlers here
Fact 2# Malays originated from Indonesia
Fact 3# Chinese originated from China
Fact 4# Indians originated from India
Fact 5# Too many lies, fabrication, cover-ups and racial politics to distort, scare and separate the races
Fact 6# Race / religion based politics is lethal and proven deadly in other 3rd world countries.
Fact 7# Not all Malays are successful or live luxuriously. Not all Chinese are successful or live luxuriously. Not all Indians are successful or live luxuriously. Therefore NEP should be for all regardless or age, race, skin color or religion. |

Youi must have heard or saw something that had pissed you off! Cheer up! Is a fact that human same as animals migrate from place to place to survive, but it is only human beings is so complicated that we politicalised everything to suits one needs. IF you put it very straightforwardly, human are all the same with same products inside you with red blood..that is why some countries do away with race and DO mix politic with religion!
About your issues on the Bangladeshi and indonesians, I think the Indonesian has destroyed the good name of foreigner workers. They came here both way , ilegal and legal and created many social insecurity to Malaysians. Long time ago, we may not have many rule and regulation so we all live under the same situation and improve it along the way, but nowaday we should have a system to *import* skilled and unskilled workers to eleminate or control the needs and demands. Our government as usual failed in so many things tat i am tired to type it out. Hence, some malaysians are skeptical on certain foreign workers..so it is not selfish.
If our government cant even give PR to legtimate professional foreign spouses that has been in malaysia so many umpteen years, this trouble makers would be the least important I would care off! Especially do you know how easy these muslim indon and bangladesh could get our IC...yeah I think you could feel I m getting hotter! I think I need to stop here..

Man's nature: Claim the land, then defend the fort !
Long Long ago, the Malay land was "large" - no effective defence...Different groups claimed different parts...and then learned to live together, or decided it was better to live together peacefully....
Now, when new groups come to claim, the origional groups are just defending their fort...

no. not equal. back to 50 year, if the Chinese and the Indians were like Indonesians and Bangladeshis in those days, which one do you properly "build or destroy". Now they were paid to be employed by contractor as blue collar worker to build high scrappers but they destroy the security(Peace)_ in this country(multy racial). they run away with young girls as young as 12 or 13. House maid stole money from their boss, harm baby.. In those days, long time ago, Chinese and Indians work and live "harmoniously" with the malay but the betrayer chinese(MCA) sold their rights to the malays. china women came to steal husband. i can't say everyone is perfect.
bundy, thumbs up! dude
now you know why not equal, example the MCA-Wanita strongly against maids from China. |

Not just Malaysian but the whole world. If a country doesn't control the influx of illegal immigrants it will lead to disaster. Economy will collapsed, crime will increase, pollution getting worse, they will be a food shortage and etc. Look at Sabah right now because of the influx of million and millions of illegal Southern Philippine and Indonesian it has become a problematic state. We need to lure immigrants that can contribute to the economy of the countries |

if you think selfish is the right word to call me, i have no objections.
now that i am living in a country i dont call home, i always wonder why the locals or its government is so generous in allowing immigrants. and i have always said to myself i am not as generous.
malaysia is not comparable to other industrialised country. look at our own backyard, heaps of people are unemployed, heaps of people live below average, heaps of people live off the street. how can a country sustain influx of immigrants who most often that not only worsen the situations and add to poverty, add to crime rates, add to unemployment rate, add to social polarisation and what not. if malaysia was as smart as singapore, take in educated professionals who really contribute evidently to the country, that is different story. why is malaysia shooing away all its talents but taking in foreign labour workers?
i have nothing against immigrants personally but it is lack of planning lack of control draining of brains in malaysia that i find hard to cope with. i am not a very good brain and my resolution is malaysia doesnt need me. when it starts realising that i can be of use to it i will be at service.
talk about everyone being equal. truly yanar, you and me, are we equal?
----
now yanar, it looks like you havent got the drift of my answer. my against immigrants is mainly due to economic reasons. crime and "stealing husband" issues are all on the side. hey afterall asians come to australia and steal the locals' husbands. asians come to australia and bring in drugs.
economic and welfare wise yanar, you and me, are we equal? |

1. Before there was Malaya and Malaysia the peninsular was known as Tanah Melayu, or Malay Land.
2. Saying this alone would result in accusations of being racist.
3. But I need to go back in history if I am going to be able to
explain about Malaysia's social contract.
4. Through treaties signed by the Rulers of the Malay States of the Peninsular the British acquired the right to rule the Malay States. These treaties obviously recognised and legitimised the States asMalay States. No one disputed this. Even the aborogines accepted this as shown by their submission to the rule of the Malay Sultans.
5. Initially the peoples living in the States were divided into
indigenous Malays and aborogines who were subjects of the Malay rulers and foreign guests who were not subjects of the rulers. There were no citizenship or documents about citizenship status as in most countries.
6. The foreign guests prospered in the British ruled Malay States and in the British colonies of Penang, Malacca and Singapore. The Malay subjects of the Rulers and the Rulers themselves did not feel threatened by the numbers of these non-Malays and the disparities between the general wealth and progress of the foreign guests and the subjects of the Rulers. They did not think that the foreigners who had settled in the country would ever demand citizenship rights.
7. When Japan conquered the Malay States and the colonies of the Straits Settlements, the Chinese felt insecure as the Japanese were their historical enemies.
8. Many Chinese formed and joined guerilla forces and disappeared into the jungle. When Japan surrendered the Chinese guerillas came out and seized many police stations in the interior and declared that they were the rulers of the country. They seized many people, Chinese and Malays and executed a number of them.
9. Malay villagers retaliated by killing the Chinese in the rural
areas. Tension rose and a Sino-Malay war was only averted because of the arrival of British forces. But the ill feeling and animosity between the two races remained high.
10. It was in this tensed situation that the British proposed the Malayan Union which would give the "guests" the right of citizenship as indistinguishable from that of the Malays.
11. The Malays rejected the Malayan Union and its citizenship proposal. They forced the British to return to the status quo ante in a new Federation of Malaya.
12. Only Chinese who were British subjects in the colonies of the Straits Settlements were eligible to become citizens in this new Federation. Naturally the Malay citizens far outnumbered the Chinese Malayan citizens.
13. Chinese leaders appealed to the British, who then persuaded the UMNO President, Dato Onn Jaafar to propose to open UMNO to all races. This proposal was rejected by the other UMNO leaders and Dato Onn had
to resign.
14. The British kept up the pressure for the Malays to be more liberal with citizenship for non-Malays.
15. Tunku Abdul Rahman, the President of UMNO decided on a coalition with MCA (Malaysian Chinese Association) and the MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress). In the 1955 elections to the Federal Legislative Assembly, since there were very few constituencies with Chinese or Indian majorities, the MCA and MIC partners had to put up candidates in Malay majority constituencies after UMNO undertook not to contest in these constituencies but to support MCA Chinese and MIC Indian candidates instead.
16. Such was the support of the Malays for the MCA and MIC alliance candidates that they won even against Malay candidates from PAS. The MCA and MIC candidates all won. Only UMNO lost one constituency against PAS.
17. The Tunku as Chief Minister of a self-governing Federation of Malaya then decided to go for independence. The British continued to inisist on citizenship rights for the Chinese and Indians as a condition for giving independence.
18. To overcome British resistance to independence and to gain the support of the Chinese and Indians, the Tunku decided to give one million citizenship to the two communities based purely on residence. One notable new citizen was (Tun) Leong Yew Koh, a former general in
the Chinese National Army who was later appointed Governor of Malacca.
19. It was at this stage that the leaders of the three communal
parties who had formed the Government of self-governing British Federation of Malaya, discussed and reached agreement on the relationship between the three communities in an independent Federation of Malaya.
20. It was to be a quid pro quo arrangement. In exchange for the one million citizenships the non-Malays must recognise the special position of the Malays as the indigenous people. Certain laws such as the pre-eminence of Islam as the state religion, the preservation of Malay reserve land, the position of the Malay Rulers and Malay customs and the distribution of Government jobs were included in the understanding.
21. On the question of national language it was agreed that Malay would be the national language. English should be the second language. The Chinese and Indians could continue to use their own languages but not in official communication.
22. Chinese and Tamil primary schools can use their languages as teaching media. They can also be used in secondary schools but these have to be private schools.
23. For their part the Chinese and Indian leaders representing their parties and communities demanded that their citizenship should be a right which could not be annulled, that they should retain their language, religion and culture, that as citizens they should have political rights as accorded to all citizens.
24. Much of these agreements and understandings are reflected in the Federal Constitution of Independent Malaya. For everything that is accorded the Malays, there is always a provision for non-Malays. Few ever mention this fact. The only thing that attracts everyone's attention and made a subject of dispute is what is accorded the Malays and other indigenous people.
25. Thus although Malay is to be the National Language, Chinese and Tamil can be used freely and in the Chinese and Tamil schools. In no other country has there been a similar provision. Even the most liberal countries do not have this constitutional guarantee.
26. The national language is to be learnt by everyone so that Malayan citizens can communicate with each other everywhere.
27. It was understood also that the Chinese language referred in the understanding were the Chinese dialects spoken in Malaysia, not the national language of China. Similarly for Malayan Indians the language was Tamil, not Hindi or Urdu or whatever became the national language of India. However, the Chinese educationists later insisted
that the Chinese language must be the national language of China i.e. Mandarin.
28. The official religion is Islam but other religions may be
practised by their adherents without any restriction. As the official religion, Islam would receive Government support. Nothing was said about support for the other religions. The non-Malays did not press this point and the Federal Constitution does not mention Government support for the other religions. Nevertheless such support have been
given.
29. A quota was fixed for the Malayan Civil Service wherein the Malays would get four posts for every one given to Chinese or Indians. However it was recognised that the professional post would be open to all races as it was never thought possible there would be enough Malays to take up these posts.
30. The result was that in the early years of independence there were more non-Malays in Division 1 than Malays.
31. The Agong or the Rulers of the States should determine quotas of scholarships and licences for Malays. But no one should be deprived of whatever permits or licences in order to give to Bumiputras.
32. The position of the Malay Rulers was entrenched and could not be challenged. There would be a Paramount Ruler chosen from among the nine Rulers who would serve for five years.
33. The rulers were to be constitutional rulers. Executive power was to be exercised by elected Menteris Besar, Ketua Menteri (Chief Minister) and Prime Minister, assisted by members of councils and cabinets. The British practice was to be the model.
34. The most important understanding was the adoption of
Parliamentary Democracy with a Constitutional Monarch, again after the United Kingdom model. It should be remembered that the British imposed an authoritarian colonial Government on the Malay State, the
power resting with the Colonial Office in London.
35. Before these the Malay States were feudal with the Malay Rulers enjoying near absolute power. Only the elites played a role in State politics. The Malay subjects had no political rights at all. Certainly the guests had no say in politics. Even the Chinese and Indian British citizens had no say though they may be appointed as Municipal or Legislative Councillors.
36. The decision to adopt a democratic system of Government was a radical step in the governance of the Federation of Malaya and of the Malay States. This was agreed to by the leaders of the three major communities as represented by their political parties i.e. UMNO, MCA and MIC. There can be no doubt that these parties represented the vast majority of the three communities in Malaya. The Communists and the other leftis
37. The Reid Commission was briefed on all these agreements and understanding so that they will be reflected in the Constitution to be drawn up. All the three parties approved this Constitution after several amendments were made. In effect the Constitution became a contract binding on all the three communities in the Federation of Malaya upon attaining independence in 1957.
38. When Sabah and Sarawak joined the Peninsular States to form Malaysia the social contract was extended to the two Borneo States. The natives of Sabah and Sarawak were given the same st |

I am not against the Indonesians and Bangladeshis but they do not act like our ancestors who first came to find a better life. I am not being selfish and I have always believe giving people a chance BUT these people need to cherish their chance. The impression they gave me is that they want a better life, using short cut and sometimes sinful ways to get things they want. There is a Chinese saying.. you have not learned to walk yet you want to fly. Indonesians and Bangladeshis are like such. They simply refused to be more down to earth and go thru hardship. They have those mentality that other people have it, they must have it. They simply forgot that our ancestors worked hard for land, home, etc.

Well said hush.
I am living in a country i wasn't born in but proud to be one in it. However, what saddens me the most is during the 90's, my country opens its border for migrants, in the name of humanitarians ground. For people seeking a better life. Load upon load of people from all around northern Asia arrived, with it came crime, drugs, thugs, gangs, prostitution... just to name a few. The strain they put onto our country social system is so overwhelming that now the local is looking for a better life somewhere else, or they just having to put up with unheard of tax revenue, just to support the migrants who likes to bleed the system, that has compromise their own children's welfare. It is truly understandable why people view, us, foreigners with distaste until they truly know who you are. Before that happens, we, the foreigners, will have to understand them and forgive them for the way they feel about us.
I have heard so many time of people crying to be treated with equal rights, unfortunately the same people is the one who spoil the brooth for others.
So are we equal? Hell no, i EARN my respect with the local, i DIDN"T cry for it. |

yea agree with you lah.. sometimes malaysian get too cocky and unrealize that we all are as equal as them in terms of humanity and human rights. btw.. thanks for the thumbs down, whoever it might be.. it's shows that " siapa yang termakan cili, dia yang terasa pedasnya"
Allah have said in the Holy Quran ( surah Al-Hujurat @ "The Dwellings" 49:11-12)
"O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former; nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former, nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it, to insult one's brother after having Faith [i.e. to call your Muslim brother (a faithful believer) as: "O sinner", or "O wicked", etc.]. And whosoever does not repent, then such are indeed Zalim."
"O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting) . And fear Allah Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful"
"O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqin]. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."
Therefore we should live in harmony here Malaysia "bumi bertuah" |
